Alterkülz: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Alterkülz is located directly on the 38-kilometre-long Schinderhannes Cycle Route. Those wishing to rent a holiday apartment and choose Alterkülz as their destination will encounter a village situated on both sides of the Alterkülzer Bach in a small valley on the edge of the Simmern–Kirchberg upland basin.

Cycling and Hiking

Longer hikes in the surrounding area can follow signposted Dream Loops, the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig and the Soonwaldsteig. The local network of routes is also suitable for inline skaters, skateboarders and walkers. The former Hunsrück railway line through Alterkülz is paved and now forms the Schinderhannes Cycle and Hiking Trail.

Excursions and Activities

The Erbeskopf recreational area offers activities in summer and winter in the wider region around Alterkülz. Nearby regional attractions include Kastellaun Castle and the Bell Animal and Adventure Park. The Geierlay suspension bridge in Mörsdorf is a regional attraction near Alterkülz. Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park is a regional destination associated with the wider area around Alterkülz.

A high ropes course is available in Kastellaun. An indoor climbing and bouldering facility is available in Kirchberg.

Culture and History

A Roman settlement site is located near Alterkülz, where traces of buildings remain visible as features in the terrain. It can be reached by parking in Neuerkirch and following the cycle path towards Alterkülz–Kastellaun; it is signposted there.

Alterkülz has documented mining heritage at the Eid mine. Zinc, lead and copper ores were mined there between the Alterkülzer Bach and the Osterkülzerbach from 1780 until the First World War.
