Rüber: Church Art, Historic Bakehouse and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Rüber
Rüber offers several ways to combine local history with outdoor activities during your stay. St. Margaret’s Church, the former school and bakehouse, and a cycling route through the village each offer a different perspective. A nature reserve is also nearby. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you would prefer to explore Rüber’s architectural history or include a bike ride in your trip.
Church and Preserved Wall Paintings
St. Margaret’s Church in Rüber was built in 1909/1910 to plans by the architect Hektor of Saarbrücken and consecrated in 1910. Its wall paintings were created in 1916 by the firm Dyderski & Nikolaus of Andernach am Rhein. They are still preserved in their original form and were carefully restored in 1994. The church’s history and wall paintings each provide a distinct point of reference in time: construction and consecration were followed just a few years later by the decoration of the walls.
The Historic Bakehouse and Traces of the Village’s Past
Rüber’s historic bakehouse is a former school and bakehouse. This half-timbered building, partly constructed with solid masonry, dates from the 18th or 19th century; it was extended at the end of the 19th century. The building stands in the village centre, has recently been restored and has been listed since 1980. Its former dual function as a school and bakehouse sets it apart from a building that served only one purpose. Its restoration and listed status are also part of its history today.
Another historic detail can be found at Küttiger Straße 2: a wayside cross stands there, probably dating from the 18th century. This dating is an assumption. Rüber was also home to a former Chapel of St. Margaret, which served as a church until 1766. The church, chapel, wayside cross and historic bakehouse offer different perspectives on the village’s past—from sacred buildings to the everyday life of the former school and bakehouse.
Nature and Cycling Route
The Feuchtgebiete im Nothbachtal nature reserve lies near Rüber, between Rüber, Küttig and Gappenach. It covers more than 27 hectares. If you would like to include a nearby protected area in your trip as well as exploring local history, you can consider visiting this natural area.
For cyclists, Route 1 runs for about 40 kilometres through Lonnig, Rüber, Kalt, Mörz and Münstermaifeld. It then follows the former railway line back in the direction of Ochtendung. Rüber is one of the places specifically named along the route. The approximate total distance and sequence of places can help you plan this as a longer day of cycling; no journey time or difficulty level is specified.
The bakehouse is also linked to the local baking tradition: At the Backes baking days in Rüber, the stone oven was used about every six weeks. Interested visitors could take part in the tradition alongside the bakehouse bakers.
