Löf can be explored in different ways: a circular trail starts and ends at the sports ground, stages of the Moselsteig start or finish in the village, and from the Kanaul ridge you can look out over the Moselle and surrounding villages. Circular Trail, Long-Distance Trail or Themed Trail
The Traumpfädchen Löfer Rabenlaypfad is a moderately difficult circular trail covering 4.72 kilometres. The start and finish are at the sports ground in Löf. This means the route is a loop and is easy to distinguish from trails that connect different places. When choosing a holiday apartment, this type of hike may be just as relevant as whether you would prefer to plan a stage of a long-distance trail.
Stage 21 of the Moselsteig ends in Löf, on Niederbachstraße near the church or the Moselle bridge. On the way to Löf, it descends through dense boxwood growth and the Kehrbachtal valley. Stage 22 starts in the opposite direction: it begins in Löf and leads via Alken to Kobern-Gondorf. So the village offers both an end point and a starting point for a stage.
The Würzlaysteig offers a different kind of trail: as a linear themed trail on the Mosel-Erlebnis-Route, it follows narrow paths from Lehmen to Löf, above some of the steepest vineyard slopes. Unlike the circular trail at the sports ground, the start and finish are therefore not at the same place. The different route types give you a practical point of reference when planning your hiking days.
Views and Scenery on the Kanaul
The Kanaul is a 242-metre-high ridge and viewpoint. From there, you can see the Moselle and surrounding villages; the Kanaul is also a popular hiking destination. A descent from its south side leads into the Nachtigallental valley. Boxwood bushes grow along the trail. The northernmost boundary of the boxwood’s range is on the Lower Moselle—a remarkable link between the hiking landscape and plant life.
Several depressions in the ground are also visible on the Kanaul, dating from the final phase of the Second World War. They are more than a metre deep and can be several metres across. As you explore the ridge, you can enjoy wide-ranging views while also seeing traces of its history.
Another viewpoint in the surrounding area is the Rabenlay above Hatzenport, which lies outside Löf. It has a shelter, a barbecue area and reclining benches. The views take in the steep vineyard slopes and the Moselle valley. The viewpoint can be reached from Löf railway station. The Kanaul and Rabenlay thus offer different places to take in the scenery, without confusing the two viewpoints.
Guided Experiences and Getting There
Around Löf and Kattenes, certified wine and nature guides lead tours through vineyards and landscapes. Along the way, they explain winegrowing and biodiversity. Participation is arranged with local providers. This is another way to connect with the landscape while learning about how it is used and its natural environment.
