The Rechenborn is a historic spring in Appenheim. A well was built there in 1760; its three pipes traditionally symbolize the Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish communities that shaped local life. The old Jewish cemetery commemorates Appenheim’s former Jewish community.
History and Culture
The Way of St. James follows an old pilgrimage route between Worms and Bingen through Appenheim; it continues towards Santiago de Compostela. The 100 Guldenmühle is a restaurant and a stamp station on the Way of St. James. Appenheim also has several mill buildings, some of which house restaurants.
Paths and Views
Designated trails in Appenheim include the 7 Springs Trail, the Way of St. James, and the Hiwwel Route. They offer views across the village. The Hiwwel Route connects Worms, Alzey, Mainz, Ingelheim, and Bingen through the hilly landscape of Rheinhessen. It is approximately 160 kilometres long and divided into four stages.
The Panorama Trail is approximately 8.5 kilometres long and reaches a viewpoint with views extending almost to the Rhine. The Tisch des Weins viewpoint looks across the village towards the Laurenziberg and as far as the Rheingau. Right next to it are wave loungers and the distinctive picture frame of the Westerberg Hiwweltour.
Wine and Soils
The Appenheimer Eselspfad vineyard site was first mentioned in 1375. It has a limestone subsoil with light loess-loam soil; Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Silvaner grow on its southern slope.
The Appenheimer Hundertgulden vineyard is described as being particularly rich in carbonates; its Terra Fusca soil formed from a prehistoric coral reef. Rieslings from the Appenheimer Hundertgulden are described as elegant, finely fruity wines with pronounced minerality.
