Hiking trails with different highlights

The Biotope and Kanzel Trail is a 3.3-kilometre circular hiking trail in Waxweiler. It starts either at the car park by the canal or at the Haus des Gastes and passes, among other places, a Roman villa, a biotope and the Devon Trail. Other stops include a viewing platform overlooking the Prüm Valley and a section of the path along the Prüm, before the circular route returns to the village. By combining historic and scenic highlights, this route offers a way to take in several different impressions on one hike.

If you are looking for a longer route, consider the Devon Trail: this circular hiking trail is 15.7 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Marian Column in Waxweiler. The shorter circular route and this longer trail therefore differ in their stated lengths and their starting and finishing points. Hiking Trail 100 circles Waxweiler in the Prüm Valley and offers views of the valley. To the west of Waxweiler, the South Eifel Nature Park Hiking Trail No. 87 also circles the hill formed by the Mühlbach Valley and the Mandelbach Valley.

Water and fossils

Waxweiler outdoor swimming pool has more than 700 square metres of water surface. Its facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool, a one-metre diving board and a three-metre diving platform. Families can also enjoy a large sunbathing lawn with shade-giving trees. A visit to the pool thus offers swimming, diving facilities and a sunbathing lawn as distinct features.

The Devonium explores the science of fossil life and the transition of plants from water to land. Its palaeontological exhibition presents these topics in a playful way. On display are fossils found in the Köppen quarry near Waxweiler, as well as the depositional environments of the rock layers exposed there. The Devonium thus links actual finds from the surrounding area with their geological context. For families who would like to add an exploration of Earth's history to their outdoor activities, it is a distinctive cultural highlight in Waxweiler.

Townscape and Marian Column

The town centre around the parish church is a protected historic area. Its small-town streetscape is mainly characterised by residential and commercial buildings from the first half of the 19th century. The Catholic parish church of St John the Baptist is a hall church built in 1770 to a design by Johannes Seiz. The lower storeys of the tower may date back to the Middle Ages. This difference in age is one of the notable details of the church and its surroundings.

Another striking landmark is the Marian Column on Eichelsberg. Anton Nagel of Trier created the votive column from red sandstone in 1948; it bears a statue of the Immaculate Conception. The column is 16 metres high, and the Madonna with the orb is 4.30 metres tall. From here, there are views of the Prüm Valley and the surrounding hills. Every year, a procession takes place on a Sunday in May from the parish church to the Marian Column. The viewpoint, the column and the procession give Waxweiler a local and religious point of reference in addition to its hiking opportunities.

Which holiday apartment in Waxweiler is right for your holiday also depends on which aspects of the town interest you most: routes through nature and the countryside, the outdoor swimming pool, the palaeontological exhibition or the historic townscape.
