St. Servatius: Architectural History and Neo-Gothic Features

The parish church of St. Servatius stands on the northeastern edge of the village, on the B410. The present church was built between 1895 and 1897 on the site of a dilapidated predecessor, to plans by Gelsenkirchen architect Lambert von Fisenne. It is a three-bay hall church with a recessed, three-sided chancel and a west tower in Neo-Gothic style. Its four-storey tower is 40 metres high. Inside, a rib-vaulted ceiling and Neo-Gothic ornamental ceiling paintings define the space; small extensions stand on either side of the chancel. The recessed chancel is narrower than the hall; its three-sided end makes the structure’s layout easy to understand.

The church offers different perspectives, from its architectural history to its interior: the construction dates point to a new building in the late 19th century, while the tower, chancel shape and painted decoration bring its Neo-Gothic design to life.
