Nature and Landscape

The Islek has a long agricultural tradition. Despite the decline in the number of agricultural holdings, its cultural landscape character remains clearly visible. The current land management in the Islek is described as nature-friendly and sustainable.

Hiking

88 in the South Eifel Nature Park leads through the villages of Eilscheid, Merlscheid and Lierfeld. The hike through these places is described as easy to moderately difficult and passes through Eifel forest and open countryside. It is 10.5 kilometres long and takes around three hours.

The themed trails in the Islek combine experiences of nature with information about the landscape, history and culture. They are clearly signposted and intended for tours of discovery on foot.

Culture and History

The ending “-scheid” in the place name is interpreted as an indication that Eilscheid originated during the late medieval period of forest clearance. The coat of arms also incorporates an interpretation of the place name: It depicts Eilscheid as a “cleared owl forest.” The coat of arms also contains a green hill symbolising the village’s location on a ridge.
