Culture

History

In the area around Großkampenberg, Leidenborn and Kesfeld, 115 bunkers and approximately 6 kilometres of tank-trap line were constructed. Two technically different concrete obstacle lines have been preserved near Großkampenberg.

The Westwall Islek Hiking Trail begins in Großkampenberg and ends in Leidenborn. The trail is classified as easy; its western section runs 5 km in the direction of Lützkampen. It is marked throughout with its logo and directional arrows. Along the Westwall Islek Hiking Trail, information boards explain the concrete barriers and other topics relating to the Westwall.

There is a shelter and seating at the starting area of the Westwall Islek Hiking Trail. Parking is available at the sports field in Großkampenberg or at the information board at the start.

Getting There

By car, Großkampenberg can be reached via the Bleialf exit from the A60, followed by Habscheid and Heckhuscheid. There is no direct train connection to Großkampenberg; the nearest railway station is in Gerolstein.
