Klausen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung in Klausen was consecrated in 1502. The Eifel Camino runs through the town and meets the Mosel Camino at the foot of Maria Heimsuchung. The approximately 180-kilometre-long Mosel Camino from Koblenz-Stolzenfels to Trier passes through Klausen and Krames. Culture

The church contains a 6.20-metre-high Antwerp high altar dating from around 1480, with scenes from the Passion of Christ. The Rieger organ has 39 stops distributed across three manuals and a pedal. The church also includes the Chapel of Grace, dating from the 15th century, which was redesigned in 1902.

The historic monastery library was built at the end of the 15th century above the sacristy of the pilgrimage church. Its holdings include a late-medieval manuscript and early printed works known as incunabula. Guided tours of the monastery library and the pilgrimage church can be booked through the Catholic parish office. The Abbot’s Garden was redesigned in 1769 on three terraces with a garden pavilion; the pavilion was restored in 1990.

At the restored Krames bakehouse, the Bakehouse Festival offers oven-baked bread with traditional toppings together with local Viez cider. The Krames walking tour also includes a building of the Trier countryside house type, in which living quarters, a stable and a barn are located under one roof. Moselle wines are described as wines that grow on the steep slopes of the river around 1 kilometre from the Klausen pilgrimage site; Moselle cuisine is described as complementing the culinary experience.

Trails and Landscape

The central Klausen walking tour takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, begins at the Marienbrunnen fountain and does not include a visit to the church. The tour through the Krames district takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes and starts at the Marienbrunnen fountain in front of the pilgrimage church. The Pohlbach Trail leads to a two-part nature trail; guided tours are available on request from the Klausen forestry district.

The Klausenkreuz viewpoint offers a view over the Wittlich Basin and the Voreifel. In clear conditions, the view from there extends as far as the volcanic Eifel.

Cycling

Klausen is connected to the Maare-Moselle Cycle Route via the pilgrimage loop. The Maare-Moselle Cycle Route runs for 55 kilometres between Daun and Bernkastel-Kues away from road traffic and has a maximum gradient of 3 percent.

Region

In the Wittlich region, Klausen is connected by VRT bus routes 321 and 322. Bernkastel-Wittlich links the volcanic Eifel, the Moselle Valley and the wooded Hunsrück. The tourist activities offered by the Bernkastel-Wittlich district include swimming, cycling, hiking, water skiing, hang gliding and winter sports.
