Kinheim lies in the large bend of the Moselle between Traben-Trarbach and Bernkastel, in the Middle Moselle–Kondelwald wine and holiday region, and stretches along the steep vineyard slopes of the Moselle. History and Culture
Kinheim is first mentioned in a document from 1148, which confirms the Echternach Abbey’s wine holdings there. Before secularization, the Echternach Farm was used by the Benedictine Abbey of Echternach to manage its vineyards in Kinheim. The complex includes a building dating from 1774, whose wine-press house gate bears the coat of arms of Abbot Michael Hormann.
Archaeological excavations in Kinheim-Kindel uncovered the remains of a Roman villa in 1976. The same excavations also uncovered a sculpture of the Gallo-Roman protective god Sucellus. The Roman villa had a central hall heated by hypocausts and a bathing complex with eight rooms. Part of the heating room has been excavated so that visitors can gain an impression of the complex. The Sucellus relief is considered an important monument because it proves that wine was already cultivated here in Roman times.
The parish church of St. Martin was begun in 1826 and consecrated in 1827. It is a Neoclassical hall church with a domed tower, rough slate-stone walls and sandstone details. Three stained-glass windows from 1943 in St. Martin refer to winegrowing. The Burghaus was the ancestral seat of the von Kinheim knightly family; its complex includes the upper castle, lower castle and gate tower.
The Marienkapelle, known as Kinheimer Bildchen, has an origin story dating back to 1730 and was expanded into a chapel around 1762–1763. A wayside shrine in Kinheim was erected in 1654, and the adjacent Baroque wayside cross followed in 1748.

Kinheim’s attractions include half-timbered houses and old wine estates. Rosenberg and Hubertuslay are named vineyard sites in Kinheim.
Landscape and Trails
Kinheim-Höhe lies above the steep vineyards and offers views across the Moselle. Several signposted hiking trails in Kinheim have a combined length of around 25 kilometers.
The Kinheim Panorama Circular Trail leads through Rosenberg, follows the Moselsteig trail towards Ürzig and returns past a reconstructed Roman wine press. The Moselle Cycle Route runs downstream from Kinheim via Kröv to Traben-Trarbach.
Getting Around Kinheim
Visitors have access to bus connections on routes 360 and 350, a Moselle boat timetable and information about walking tours. The Panorama Circular Trail can be reached by bus; seasonally, it is possible to return from Ürzig by bus or boat.
