Experience the waterway junction and the Weser
The Minden waterway junction includes a 341-metre-long canal bridge over the Weser. It has been in place since the opening of the Rhine–Weser Canal in 1906. The waterway junction is considered the largest double waterway junction in the world and also makes Minden interesting to visitors with a passion for technology and water engineering.
A guided tour lasting around two hours provides an overview of the facility and its surroundings at the information centre, using models, graphics and maps. It then continues to the modern Weser lock and the historic shaft lock. The tour therefore combines clear explanations with visits to both locks. Explore the city’s history at your own pace
The Minden Museum presents what makes the city distinctive in the past, present and future. Alongside special exhibitions, the permanent exhibition offers a look at Minden’s history in seven chapters and from different perspectives. It also covers the region’s prehistoric and early history. A multimedia city model complements the museum visit, currently offering seven different multimedia city tours.
Minden Cathedral also tells the story of the city’s long history. It is more than 1,200 years old; its history began at the end of the 8th century with the construction of a simple, towerless hall church on the cathedral hill. The cathedral treasury houses, among other treasures, the Minden Cross, the Shrine of St Peter and the Silver Madonna. The Cathedral Treasury app provides information about the exhibits and events in the treasury and Minden Cathedral.
The Minden Cathedral Treasury is also a stamp station and information point for pilgrims travelling the Sigwardsweg and the Way of St James No. 3 from Minden to Soest. The Old Town and special discoveries
In Minden’s upper and lower towns, cobbled lanes and closely packed half-timbered houses shape the cityscape. You can explore the Old Town route independently using a city map or digitally via Komoot. Various city and themed tours offer another way to discover Minden’s stories and history.
An unusual stop is the ship mill on the Weser, near Minden city centre. It is Germany’s only operational ship mill. There is a restaurant attached, and visitors can learn from the millers how grain is turned into flour.
