Nature
The Great Torfmoor covers around 500 hectares. It was officially designated a nature reserve in 1980 and is described as Westphalia’s largest raised bog.
Wooden boardwalks lead into the Great Torfmoor, which provides a habitat for rare plants and birds. The Moorhus visitor centre provides information about the formation of the Great Torfmoor and the organisation of guided walks through the moor.
The roughly 47-hectare forest and meadow landscape around Sonnenhügel in Mindenerwald offers space for walks and relaxation.
Culture and History
The historic Meyer distillery complex at Mindener Straße 71 consists of a distillery building and a boiler house with a chimney. The preserved technical equipment of the former Meyer distillery makes every step of the grain distilling process comprehensible.
Südhemmern Windmill was built around 1830 as a wooden, octagonal mill. The local history room in the former miller’s house presents flax processing, spinning, weaving, rope-making and cigar production.
The Von-Oeynhausen estate, also known as Reimlers Hof, is a Baroque manor house as well as a historic and cultural monument. Historic windmills in Hille line the Westphalian Mill Road.
The “Dütt un' Datt” programme combines a guided walk through the Great Torfmoor with an explanation of the grain distilling process at the distillery museum. A journey on a historic Prussian train from Minden can be combined with a walk through Hille and a visit to the Old Distillery.
Geographical Location
Hille lies between the slopes of the Wiehen Hills and the open North German Plain. The Mittelland Canal runs through the fields of Hille.
