Bonn: Beethoven, Roman Times and Green Discoveries
Accommodation in Bonn
Bonn can be discovered through a wide variety of experiences: the Beethoven House takes you to the composer’s birthplace, a Roman legionary camp can still be traced in today’s street layout, and botanical gardens showcase plants from different climate zones. There are also museums covering topics from the cultural history of the Rhineland to contemporary art. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore start by considering which of Bonn’s many sides you would like to focus on during your stay.

Beethoven and Roman Traces
The Beethoven House, a museum in Ludwig van Beethoven’s birthplace, is located in central Bonn. Its permanent exhibition is spread across twelve rooms and includes more than 100 original exhibits. This gives the museum visit a tangible structure: you move through several exhibition rooms and encounter original objects along the way. If Beethoven is particularly important to your trip, you can make this visit the cultural centrepiece of your stay.
The Roman camp “Castra Bonnensia” offers a different historical perspective. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Lower German Limes”. The layout of its buildings can still be recognised in today’s street plan. For families with children aged 6 to 12, Bonn-Information offers a Roman-themed tour through the former legionary camp. If you prefer to explore history as part of a guided tour, this is a specific option for this age group. The “Didinkirica” presentation area in Bonn’s Castell district is open to registered visitor groups.
Museums for Different Interests
Bonn’s museums focus on different themes rather than repeating a single one. The LVR-Landesmuseum Bonn’s inclusive and participatory permanent exhibition is devoted to 400,000 years of Rhineland cultural history. The Kunstmuseum Bonn offers a free audio guide app explaining 37 stops, from Classical Modernism to the present day. You can choose where to go based on whether you are more interested in a broad cultural-historical perspective or in art.
The Museum Koenig Bonn combines a museum visit with an insight into the work of the institution: it offers an introductory tour of its history, research and permanent exhibition. It can be reached on U-Bahn lines 16, 63 and 66 via the Museum Koenig stop. Tram lines 62, 65, 66 and 67 go to the Beethoven House; the stops are Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz and Beethoven-Haus. If you plan to visit one of these museums, you can take its transport connections into account as you find your way around Bonn.
Botanical Gardens, Palace Gardens and Flea Market
Nature lovers will also find specific places to explore in Bonn. The Botanical Gardens cultivate around 10,000 plant species from 388 plant families. In their greenhouses, visitors can experience the plant life of the tropics, subtropics, monsoon regions and deserts. The different climate zones give the visit a clear theme and provide a contrast to the city’s historical and art-related attractions.
The Palace Gardens offer a profusion of flowers throughout the year, and there is seating by the pond. If you would like to combine time outdoors with a break, you can add this spot to your itinerary. From April to October, a flea market takes place in Rheinaue Leisure Park on the third Saturday of every month. If you are planning your trip during this period, you can include market day as a separate activity.
Church Music and Other Places to Explore
The Kreuzkirche is a place to visit and pray, and is open for these purposes from 9 am to 5 pm Tuesday to Saturday. It is also regarded in Bonn as a venue for outstanding church music and particularly festive services. This combines specific visiting hours with a focus on music. Depending on whether you prefer art, history, plants, a market or church music, you can tailor your stay without trying to fit every activity into the same day.
When looking for a suitable holiday apartment, it may be helpful to first decide which Bonn experiences matter most to you, and then take the stops and opening hours mentioned above into account as you find your way around. This way, your choice of where to stay is based on your travel group’s interests and the visits you actually plan, rather than on a general idea of Bonn.
