Selpin: Manor Parks, Manor Houses and Cycling Routes

Selpin can be explored through several layers of history: Selpin Manor House was built around 1751 and remodelled in 1850. Cycling routes, parkland and historic places offer further ideas for planning a trip. The 25-kilometre “Steinreiches ParkLand” cycling tour also passes through Selpin; the municipality is also home to manor estates with very different landscapes.

Cycling and a former railway line

At 25 kilometres, “Steinreiches ParkLand” offers a clear framework for an active excursion. The tour starts in Woltow. There is a car park on the outskirts of the village, heading towards Selpin. These landmarks help you get your bearings at the start and along the route, without confusing the route with Selpin’s village centre.

Another chapter in transport history lies south of Selpin: a former sugar beet railway line runs there. Sugar beets were once transported on small rail wagons along it to the sugar factory in Tessin. This former use is quite different from today’s cycling theme; the line tells the story of a transport route that once served agriculture and sugar production.

Manor parks with distinctive features

Wesselstorf Manor House is located within the municipality. Its grounds include gardens with old fruit varieties and a partially restored park with a valuable collection of mature trees, including many exotic species. A vista runs from the south side of the house across the pond to a rise known as Schlossberg. The design creates a clear visual connection between the house, the water and the rising ground.

The Wolkengarten is also in Wesselstorf. It was created on a former goose pasture and is continually being developed. Cultural events are also held at the manor house at irregular intervals, including open gardens, concerts, readings and exhibitions. Reddershof Manor House, also known as Reddershof Castle, offers a further kind of park landscape. It stands in a hilly park covering several hectares, with elevation changes of several metres in places. The municipality therefore has both designed garden spaces such as those in Wesselstorf and a park in Reddershof shaped more strongly by undulating terrain. The entire municipality of Selpin is included in the “Wesselstorf” landscape conservation area.

Traces of earlier history

In Woltow, the inner park covers about 8 hectares and is an archaeological monument. The moat and rampart of the old Slavic castle complex are still clearly visible. Woltow Manor House stands on an old Slavic castle complex and has been falling into disrepair since 1990. These places bring together visible landforms and a long history of settlement, while their distinct features remain separate.

Drüsewitz Manor House is privately owned and used as a residence. This information is useful when planning to see the historic houses in the municipality: not every building is open to the public. Nature and culture nearby
