Cammin: Village Church, Manor Houses and Hiking

Cammin brings together a fieldstone church with a history of its organ and altar, manor house history and hiking opportunities in the municipality. Churches and Architectural History on Two Scales

Cammin village church is a rectangular fieldstone building with dressed corner blocks. Inside are a carved altar dating from around 1500 and an organ built in 1722 by Lübeck organ builder H. Hantelmann. Hantelmann was a pupil of A. Schnitger. The time gap between the altar and the organ shows how the church brings together traces from different periods of art history.

The church in Weitendorf bei Cammin is in the municipality of Cammin, but outside the village of Cammin itself. With a footprint of 16 by 8 metres, it is the smallest church in Rostock district and was first mentioned in an account book in 1503. It is made mostly of granite boulders; the upper part of the west gable and sections of the masonry are made of brick. A wooden Baroque pulpit with a whale as its base adds to its distinctive architectural details.

Manor Houses with Different Histories

The estate manager’s house belonging to Cammin manor house was built at the end of the 19th century. The manor house building was renovated at the initiative of a support association. In Wohrenstorf, also within the municipality, the manor house was built between 1732 and 1735; its façade was renovated in 2014.

Wohrenstorf manor house is privately owned. The surviving features include original stucco elements on all the ceilings, the foyer, and most of the doors and their surrounds. Remnants of a landscaped garden also belong to the manor house. Its architectural history combines a specific date with surviving design features and the story of the renovation in Cammin.

Hiking and the Southern Beet Railway Trail

The Recknitz and Stegendiecksbach rivers offer opportunities for longer hikes in the municipality of Cammin.
