Thelkow is a destination for travellers who want to combine nature experiences, local history and a day at the lake. A nature trail leads via Lieper Burg to Teufelssee, offering opportunities for hiking and relaxation. The village is home to a remarkable fieldstone church, while Kuhlensee, the municipality’s bathing lake, lies on the northern edge of the village. This allows you to plan your trip according to your preferred focus: being active on paths through forests and meadows, exploring cultural history, or making time for swimming during the designated season.

Nature experiences around Lieper Burg and Teufelssee

The nature trail leads through Thelkow via Lieper Burg to Teufelssee. Those who want to explore the landscape on foot will find the 7.6-kilometre hike “To Lieper Burg” in the surrounding area. It leads from Liepen along forest and meadow paths to Lieper Burg and Teufelssee, and then back again. The tour is designed as an easy to moderate hike on level to gently hilly terrain and takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes on foot. This gives you a specific route for planning your day, without having to schedule a long mountain hike. From the B110 coming from the direction of Tessin and Vilz, access is via Thelkow and onwards to Liepen.

Lieper Burg itself is an early Slavic hillfort from the 8th century in the municipality of Thelkow. It is also part of the Lieper Burg landscape conservation area. Those interested in early settlement history and landscapes can include this site, the nature trail and Teufelssee in their excursion plans.

Village church and megalithic tombs: history to discover

A cultural highlight in the village is Thelkow village church. The fieldstone building, with brickwork used in parts, was constructed between approximately 1260 and 1280, during the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic architectural style. Notable features include the richly articulated south portal, star-shaped rosettes and a keystone depicting the Lamb of God. The church therefore offers specific architectural details for anyone who wants to look at historic buildings as well as landscapes while travelling.

The megalithic tombs on the Recknitz near Liepen offer another journey into the past. They are among the best-preserved structures of the Late Neolithic period and date from 3500 to 2800 BCE. At the Liepen megalithic tombs, information panels explain how the structures were built, as well as the way of life of the first farmers and livestock breeders to settle there. This means that a visit need not be limited to the stones themselves: the panels also provide context for better understanding the site’s historical significance.

A day at Kuhlensee

Kuhlensee is the bathing lake of the municipality of Thelkow and lies on the northern edge of the village. The bathing season runs annually from 15 May to 10 September. If you want to combine nature, history and swimming during your holiday, you can take this period into account when planning your trip. Outside this season, the nature trail, Lieper Burg, the village church and the megalithic tombs remain independent reasons to discover Thelkow and its surroundings.
