The Jahn Chapel and its history

The Jahn Chapel is a Neo-Gothic brick building dating from 1851. Its octagonal floor plan and rich ornamentation of pinnacles, tracery and decorative bands make its architecture distinctive. Its origins are also closely linked to the Klingenberg: after Eduard Rudolph Jahn buried his wife Johanna and daughter Sophia there, he began building a memorial chapel in the woods.

An exhibition in the chapel explores the origins and genealogy of the Jahn family, as well as the building’s history, decline and rescue. Klingenberg, the manor park and the avenue

The monument is part of a broader historical setting: the remains of the old manor park, the avenue and the entire Klingenberg are protected as a garden monument. Eduard Jahn had a path built from the old manor park to the Klingenberg and planted a closely spaced avenue of small-leaved lime trees and chestnut trees along it. He also had a fieldstone wall built around the Klingenberg; how visible it is varies with the seasons. Together, the chapel, park and avenue tell the story of the carefully designed memorial landscape on the Klingenberg.

Lakes and protected areas in the municipality

The Klein Vielener See lies within the municipality. It is a typical glacial channel lake, about 2,300 metres long and up to 550 metres wide. A nutrient-rich shallow lake, it is designated as a nature reserve. Broad reed belts, adjacent alder carrs and wet meadows define its shores. The lake is also a breeding and resting area for numerous waders and waterbirds, as well as a wintering and roosting site for northern geese, ducks and sawbills.

The Wedensee offers another perspective on the natural environment within the municipality. It has partially silted up and is bordered by broad belts of reeds and alder carr. Its protected shores and adjacent grasslands provide habitat for numerous bird species; cranes and western marsh harriers breed there. Those interested in wetlands and birdlife will find a different landscape here than at Klein Vielener See.

Trails and orientation for planning your trip

Near Adamsdorf, the municipality has a nature trail loop about 4.2 kilometres long. Several stops explore plant and animal life in settlements, fields, meadows and forests. The Rosenholz and Zippelower Bachtal nature reserve is also accessible via hiking trails; the spring landscape is particularly highlighted there in April and May. These examples offer different options for planning your trip: a loop trail with nature stops, or paths through a protected area with a distinctive spring character.

The municipality of Klein Vielen borders the western part of Müritz National Park to the west; small parts of the municipality lie within the national park. However, Klein Vielen is not considered a typical gateway to Müritz National Park, unlike Granzin, Boek or Federow, for example. The Serrahn section of the national park is about 20 kilometres southeast of the municipality. For travel planning, the municipality’s villages can be reached via the B 193.
