Beach and Dune Walk
The beach stretches for more than 15 kilometres along the northern end of the island. The Dune Walk offers a different scale: it begins in the east of the island village, is four kilometres long and takes about two and a half hours. Its approximate duration makes it easier to set aside time for the walk in your daily plans. The beach and the route represent different vacation priorities: the wide coastal landscape on the one hand, and a specific walk on the other. If you want to balance excursions with free time, you can plan the route as a separate activity.
Island History and Nature
The Old Island Church on Spiekeroog was built in 1696 and is the oldest island church in the East Frisian Islands. At Rathausplatz, by the entrance to the historic village centre, the Island Museum is housed in a former captain’s house dating from 1715. The museum tells the story of Spiekeroog’s nature and history. The church and museum provide different historical points of reference: the island church and a former captain’s house at the entrance to the village centre.
In the east of Spiekeroog, at Hermann Lietz School, you will find the Wittbülten National Park House. Its permanent exhibition covers tides, the formation of the island, island habitats and marine mammals. At the research centre, visitors, school classes and student groups can study Spiekeroog’s flora and fauna in the laboratory. The exhibition and laboratory offer different ways of exploring nature: through the subjects covered in the permanent exhibition, or by studying flora and fauna in the laboratory.
The Ostplate as a Natural Landscape
The Ostplate is a natural landscape whose largely undisturbed natural development has continued from its formation a few hundred years ago to the present day. The area explores the dynamics of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, as well as the distinctive features and threats facing this landscape. This brings not only individual habitats into focus, but also the development and changes of this natural landscape.
Spiekeroog in the East Frisian Islands Destination
Within the broader East Frisian Islands destination, Spiekeroog is one of seven islands: Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge. The East Frisian Islands lie off the coast of Lower Saxony along the East Frisian peninsula from which they take their name, and are a hotspot of biodiversity within the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. The East Frisian Islands have specially designated cycle paths that can be used with your own bicycle or one rented locally; rental options vary from island to island.
