Wangerooge: Beach, Mudflats and Island Railway

Getting here by island railway

The ferry travels from the port of Harlesiel to Wangerooge, arriving on the western side of the island. From there, a narrow-gauge railway runs through the salt marshes to the town. The island railway is a special experience in itself: its route passes through dunes and mudflats, and between the ferry terminal and the island’s centre it crosses the salt marshes by the West Lagoon. Passengers can enjoy views of the local flora and fauna along the way. The only metre-gauge railway operated by Deutsche Bahn has been running on Wangerooge since 1897. The island railway network covers six kilometres.

Wangerooge is car-free, and all destinations are easy to reach on foot or by bicycle. This makes it easy to plan a guided exploration of the mudflats as a holiday activity in its own right, separate from a day at the beach.

Birdlife and island history

At the National Park Visitor Centre, the “6 out of 190” exhibition follows six migratory birds on their journey from north to south and back. A total of 190 bird species can be found on Wangerooge. During the annual Migratory Bird Days, birds stop over on the island that you would not otherwise see in the North Sea. The subject of bird migration therefore features both in the exhibition and at this annual event.

The National Park Visitor Centre is centrally located in the town centre, behind the trees of the rose garden, and has been designed to be accessible. It also offers special programmes for school classes and holiday activities for children. Staff run more than 1,000 events each year.
