The Peldemühle was built in 1741 for hulling barley, together with a residential building and barn. It is considered the oldest single-storey gallery Dutch windmill in north-west Germany. At the historic bakehouse, visitors can see how grain is turned from flour into bread. This lets you pair a visit to the mill with a look at another step in grain processing.

Aviation history is another focus. The Robert von Zeppelin Aviation Museum opened in Wittmund’s pedestrian zone in June 2015. It explores the region’s close ties to aviation and introduces young people in particular to the historic airfield “Wittmundhafen.” Exhibits include aviation memorabilia, artworks by local artists and other display pieces.

The pedestrian zone is also home to the visitor attraction “Hands of Fame.” It includes the unique “Federal Presidents’ Square,” inaugurated in 2010. Those interested in older local history will find more points of interest at St. Nicolai Church and in the castle park: the Evangelical Lutheran church, with its sandstone portal, was consecrated as a hall church in 1776. In the park, the site within the well-preserved ramparts marks the location of the castle built in 1461.

Forest Trails and Cycling

Wittmund Forest covers more than 700 hectares. Several hiking trails and paths are suitable for forest walks and cycling. The forest is also home to a circular bog known as an Ice Age pingo ruin; an observation platform with a bench offers a place to pause. The Wittmund Forest nature conservation centre complements these nature-related attractions as an independently run educational institution focused on nature and the environment.

There are several options for cycling routes. The Jan-Schüpp Bicycle Path runs partly along the Harle, the old shipping route between Carolinensiel and Wittmund. You can start or finish it at any point; check current route conditions before setting out. The fourth stage of the Tour de Fries also passes through Wittmund and is signposted throughout with a blue-yellow-green logo. The Bicycle Path therefore offers flexible start and end points, while the Tour de Fries stage takes you through town as part of a designated route.

Experiences and East Frisian Culture

The East Frisian Abitur has been offered in Wittmund since 1978 and is open to people of all ages. Nine events take place over the course of a day, including distance boßeln, pole-vaulting with a padstock, milking a cow and drinking tea. This unusual format adds something different to the historic sights. The time of year can also influence your choice of activities: in summer, the castle park is used for events such as music performances, though programmes vary from one event to another. The Wittmund cultural association organizes concerts, usually held in the historic hall of the district administration building. Check the dates for any specific concerts you have in mind. The weekly market in Wittmund’s market square offers regional and non-regional products.

As part of the wider travel destination of Lower Saxony, East Frisian tea culture is also part of the region’s cultural background. From the second half of the 17th century, it developed in East Frisia into a ceremony with specific tea blends, porcelain and rituals. In Wittmund, this theme can be paired with the tea-drinking event at the East Frisian Abitur, although the two experiences are not the same format.

The Isums leisure and adventure pool offers swimming and large water slides; you can also take a pedal boat out on the Harle.
