Greetsiel: Fishing Harbour, Brickwork and Canals

Greetsiel combines a historic fishing harbour with brick buildings and themes related to the Wadden Sea. The harbour is over 600 years old and is also shaped by shrimp fishing: with 25 shrimp trawlers, it is home to East Frisia’s largest fishing fleet; the picturesque harbour is regularly visited by the trawlers. Harbour Life and Historic Streetscapes

Notable buildings include the eastern of the two twin windmills, a landmark of Greetsiel, and the Evangelical Reformed Church. The windmill was built in 1706. The church was built in two phases between 1380 and 1410 as a rectangular, single-nave hall church made of brick. “Single-nave” describes a church with one nave; “hall church” refers to its continuous interior space. The church is also home to Lower Saxony’s oldest ecclesiastical ship’s weather vane, dating from around 1700. The narrow streets are lined with lovingly restored gabled houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. The windmill, church and gabled houses represent different chapters in Greetsiel’s architectural history.

The Steinhaus (Stone House) also reaches far back into the past: it was originally built in the 14th century as a manor house for the Cirksena counts. Exhibitions are regularly held in its historic rooms. However, access is currently only possible during events or on special dates; there are no set regular opening hours. Check before your visit whether a suitable date is scheduled. This lets you take the changing exhibition themes into account in your plans, rather than assuming you can visit at any time.

The Wadden Sea, Exhibitions and Waterways

The exhibition “365 Days – Around Ley Bay” is on display at the Greetsiel National Park House. Interactive exhibits explore seasonal changes in the Wadden Sea, nature experiences and excursion destinations in the surrounding area, as well as life on the coast, including coastal protection and fishing. An aquarium features native fish and small creatures from the North Sea. If you are travelling with children, these different topics can provide conversation starters—from coastal protection and the animals in the aquarium to changes in the Wadden Sea. The exhibition thus offers a different focus from the town’s architectural history and harbour activity.

You can also explore Greetsiel on the water. Visitors can hire kayaks, canoes and pedal boats to discover the canal network of the Krummhörn. Greetsiel is also a good starting point for water tours on this canal network. Hire boats and water tours are different ways to take an excursion along the canals. Buses run regularly from a bus station to Greetsiel. For specific travel arrangements, it is worth checking the timetable for your travel day. There is also a free bicycle parking facility directly at the National Park House, with around 100 spaces.
