Großenkneten between Fishponds and Heathland
Accommodation in Großenkneten
The municipality of Großenkneten stretches across a wide area between the Hunte and Lethe rivers in the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park. One distinctive natural area is the Ahlhorn Fishponds: created artificially around 100 years ago, the area also includes biotopes of statewide importance for species and ecosystem conservation, as well as for protecting geological landforms.
Ahlhorn Fishponds: Wetland and Protected Landscape
Thanks to the near-natural character of some of the ponds and the Lethe lowlands, the wetland is home to an amphibian population unique in northwest Lower Saxony. The protected area also includes valuable habitats for various species of dragonflies, butterflies, breeding birds and visiting birds. Different habitats and animal groups are therefore in focus here—from the wetland’s amphibians to the bird and insect species found in these valuable areas.
Hiking through Sager Heath
The Sager Heath circular hiking trail starts in Sage, near Großenkneten, and is around 17 kilometres long. It passes through heathland and pond landscapes, with stretches of woodland and their wildlife surrounding the route. The circular trail offers a different focus from the wetland: there, amphibian populations and valuable habitats take centre stage; here, it is the changing mix of heathland, ponds and woodland. The route length and starting point in Sage make this hike easy to factor into your travel plans.
Local History and Excursions
In Ahlhorn, the “Fliegerhorst” Museum is dedicated to preserving and presenting the historic significance of Ahlhorn air base since its founding in 1915. Nature and history thus offer different themes for your stay. In addition, the Großenkneten municipality’s tour guides’ working group offers visitors a varied programme of cycling and hiking tours, company visits and talks. Alongside nature-focused activities you can choose for yourself, there are also organised tours and other themed activities.
Fish, Festivals and Seasonal Events
Hikers can buy products from the fish smokehouse and the forestry office’s own game in the fish farm’s farm shop. The annual “Mai(b)rauch” event on 1 May features freshly smoked trout while stocks last, as well as a small supporting programme and drinks. Every odd-numbered year, a large farm festival is held on the last Sunday in September at the listed fishpond complex, attracting many thousands of people. The events follow different schedules: Mai(b)rauch takes place every year, while the farm festival is held in odd-numbered years. If you want one of these events to shape your stay, factor the relevant date into your travel plans.
Find the Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans
When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Großenkneten, you could first consider whether nature areas, a hike, local history or an event date should shape your stay. For the Sager Heath trail, Sage is a useful reference point for the starting location; for the festivals, the recurring dates provide a guide to when they take place.
