Gartow is located in the landscape of the Elbe Valley Nature Park. At the heart of the town lies the 67-hectare Gartow Lake, which was created primarily for local recreation.
The official information centre in Gartow focuses on beavers and white-tailed eagles and includes exhibitions on the development of the cultural landscape. The Gartow Tourist Information Centre provides information on activities and museums, cycling and hiking maps, as well as fishing permits for Gartow Lake.
Near Gartow, the observation tower in Nienwalde and the adjacent beaver educational trail offer opportunities to observe white-tailed eagles and beavers and learn about their protection. Gartow Castle, listed as a Baroque building, was rebuilt between 1710 and 1725 after several major fires. It is the historic manor house of the Gartow estate and stands on the site of a medieval castle complex.
