Discover the History of the Heath
At the Heath Experience Centre in Undeloh, the history of the heath is told across a broad span of time, from the Ice Age to modern heathland management. Visitors encounter this development across three levels. A replica of a typical burial chamber is also on display and can be explored from the inside. The visit thus connects the landscape with its history and adds a cultural insight to a stay that is not intended to consist solely of hikes.
Another historic landmark is St. Magdalene's Church, one of the oldest buildings in Undeloh. It was probably built as a fieldstone church before the year 1200 and was first directly mentioned in a document in 1244. For many centuries, it served as a fortified church. During frequent wars and crusades, its massive fieldstone walls offered protection to women and children. This history makes the church interesting to travellers who would like to explore the town's historical traces as well as the heathland.
Heathland Discovery Trail and Landscape
Together with its outlying settlements, Undeloh lies in the heart of the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park and the Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve. The Undeloh Heathland Discovery Trail offers a closer look at the landscape: it crosses the 91-metre-high Heidberg, which offers views across the countryside. Along the way, visitors pass Wilseder Red cattle and Dülmen ponies. Both are used to maintain and preserve the heathland. The trail therefore combines a viewpoint with an example of how the landscape is managed.
Circular Walk or Stage Hike?
For a circular hike, the 20.6-kilometre Heideschleife Radenbachtal is a good option. A convenient starting point is the hiking car park in Undeloh; the loop passes many highlights of the Lüneburg Heath. If you would rather take a longer hiking route, you could consider the approximately 14-kilometre fourth stage of the Heidschnuckenweg. It leads from Undeloh through the Radenbach Valley, a heathland valley with a distinctive natural character. The two routes differ in length and course: the Heideschleife is a circular route, while the Heidschnuckenweg is a stage route. Bear these details in mind when choosing your hiking day, without inferring walking time or difficulty from distance alone.
Heide-Shuttle During the Summer Season
Each summer season, the Heide-Shuttle runs through Undeloh on routes 2, 3 and 6 from 3 July to 3 October. The buses have bicycle trailers; bicycles and e-bikes can be taken along free of charge. The stated season dates help you plan when to visit.
