Bossard Art Site: Art in the House, Temple and Garden

Near Jesteburg, Johann and Jutta Bossard created an expressive Gesamtkunstwerk that brings together different art forms. The Bossard Art Site ensemble includes a residential and studio building in the Heimatschutz style, an Expressionist art temple, several gardens and an artistically designed park. The rooms are also artistically designed down to the finest detail; they include the Edda Hall, the Eros Hall and the Fairy-Tale Room.

The buildings make different architectural statements: the residential and studio building was built in the Heimatschutz style, while the art temple is designed in the Expressionist style. The artistic work extends beyond the architecture to the rooms and gardens. In this way, the ensemble brings together architecture, interior design and garden art rather than focusing on a single art form.

From Buchholz station, the art site can be reached by a cycling route of around 7 km on a paved cycle path alongside the K 83. On the KVG route 4148, stops at the Bossard Art Site stop are listed at 11:57, 13:57 and 15:57 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Check the current timetable before travelling.

Art, Forest and Water in Jesteburg

The Jesteburg Art House presents changing group and solo exhibitions featuring national and international artistic perspectives. One focus is the work of young contemporary artists. This sets its profile apart from the Bossard Art Site: here, changing exhibitions are the focus, while there, the focus is the Gesamtkunstwerk created by Johann and Jutta Bossard.

Jesteburg outdoor pool has a 1.90-metre-deep lap pool, a leisure pool with areas for non-swimmers and swimmers, a rainbow slide and a baby pool with water features. The lap pool, leisure area, slide and water features each add their own appeal to a day by the water. As facilities may change, check the operator’s current information before visiting.

Near Jesteburg, the “Der Trickser” fairytale hiking trail runs for 3.2 km, with 15 interactive stations, up and down through Klecker Forest and a mixed forest, past fish ponds. The route combines a manageable length with several stops and changing woodland surroundings. Its ups and downs are another practical consideration when planning this outing.

Harburg as a Wider Landscape

The wider Harburg travel destination offers a broader landscape setting. Harburg district includes the Elbe marshes, the Harburg Hills, the Northern Heath and, above all, the Lüneburg Heath. These landscapes form a varied natural area with a distinctive cultural landscape. A dense network of cycle routes runs through the district, including 1,000 kilometres of signposted tourist cycling trails.

The Heidschnuckenweg also gives an idea of the scale of regional tours: opened in 2012, the trail extends for 223 kilometres from Hamburg through Harburg, Heidekreis and Celle districts, and across more than 30 large and small heathland areas in the Northern and Southern Heath. It runs for 13 stages through the Lüneburg Heath and is complemented by twelve Heath Loops ranging in length from 1.4 to 20.9 kilometres. Together, the cycle network and hiking trail offer different ways to explore the wider Harburg landscape.

The wider Harburg travel destination also includes the Lüneburg Heath Wildlife Park. More than 1,200 animals live there, including Siberian tigers, wolves and snow leopards. This wildlife offers another natural highlight in the region, while the art house, outdoor pool and nearby Bossard Art Site provide different reasons to go on an outing around Jesteburg.
