The desire to rent a holiday apartment in Gleichen turns attention to a municipality that is home to one of the hiking areas in the Göttingen region and has a distinctive, varied landscape.
The twin mountains Alten and Neuengleichen gave Gleichen its name. The villages of Gleichen lie along the German Fairy Tale Route (Frau Holle Route), the German Holiday Route (Alps–Baltic Sea) and the European long-distance hiking trail from the Baltic Sea to the Adriatic.
Castles once stood on Alten and Neuengleichen; they were founded around 1100 by the Counts of Reinhausen. After the Thirty Years' War, the castles became picturesque ruins.

The Bielstein is a rocky spur measuring approximately 100 metres beside the village road in Reinhausen. Its medieval carvings include round-arched niches, sharpening grooves and two disc crosses.
During the summer season, the Bremke Forest Stage presents Grimm's fairy tales every weekend. As an industrial museum, the Gartetal Historical Spinning Mill is of importance beyond the region. The spinning mill preserves machinery from the years 1886 to 1900, and guided tours are available by arrangement. The Gartetal Historical Spinning Mill also combines an industrial monument, a cultural pub and a gallery.
The Hurkutstein is an artificially shaped hermit's cave in the Reinhäuser Forest.
The Mackenröder Spitze is an observation tower with remarkable views of the Harz Mountains. From Groß Lengden, it can be reached via the Spinne junction in the Groß Lengder Forest.
