Plesse Castle was first mentioned in historical records in 1015 and is considered one of the most significant hilltop castles in southern Lower Saxony. The castle is a day-trip destination near Göttingen, offering views over the city and the surrounding region, and is one of the viewpoints in the area around Göttingen.

History

Visitors can walk through the castle courtyard and see the remains of the former chapel and manor house. The keep has walls four metres thick. Plesse Castle is open all year round.

The Bielstein circular hiking trail runs from Mariaspring through a rugged gorge to the large sandstone rocks of Bielstein. From the keep of Plesse Castle, there are views over the Leine Valley, the Solling and the Harz. The Great Tower at Plesse Castle offers panoramic views; from Eichsfeld and Goethelinde at Plesse Castle, there are views over the Leine Valley. Bovenden's Lohberg has extensive hiking trails. The yew forest can be reached easily from the village.

Culture

The Generations Park is located in Wurzelbruchpark. It has fitness equipment for endurance, strength and flexibility, as well as a sandstone climbing wall for children.

At Bovenden Market, more than 20 traders offer regional and non-regional specialities. The market emphasises freshness, quality and seasonal relevance. Bovenden also holds a traditional harvest festival every year, featuring a parade and dancing.

Bovenden has a city bus connection to Göttingen. There are motorway connections nearby. Rail connections are available in Göttingen, Northeim and Nörten-Hardenberg.
