Swimming and days by the water in Saterland
The 9.5-hectare Hollener See is ideal for swimming, strolling and hiking; there is a bathing beach on its shore. This means you can enjoy time by the water as well as walking. If you would like to include different swimming options in your holiday plans, the Saterland leisure pool has a swimming area for toddlers and a 25 × 10 metre pool. There is also a 1-metre diving board and a 3-metre diving tower.
Another water-based activity starts at the paddle and pedal station in Strücklingen, where visitors can canoe on the Sagter Ems. If you plan to take this trip, check the current operating arrangements directly with the station. Unlike swimming at Hollener See, this is a specific activity on the river; the two options offer different ways to spend a holiday day.
Discover the moorland
The Seelter Foonkieker is a peat railway ride operated by the “Moorkultur Ramsloh” peat works. Visitors get to know the moorland and its soft peat soil. The ride also explains how the raised bogs formed, peat extraction and renaturation. This experience combines views of the landscape with insights into its use and development. If you plan to take the ride, check the current operating arrangements with the peat works.
The Imkehörne nature reserve in Saterland/Strücklingen offers another way to explore the subject of moorland. It is a raised bog area; a platform with information panels offers views across the bog. The peat railway ride and the platform therefore offer different perspectives: the ride also focuses on formation, extraction and renaturation, while the platform provides views across the area.
Windmill and Sater Frisian language
The Galerie-Holländer windmill, built in 1870, stands in Scharrel. Visits are possible by arrangement, so please agree on a time in advance. The language is also part of Saterland’s cultural identity: “Seelterlound” is the name of Saterland in the Sater Frisian language. Sater Frisian is a dialect of the Frisian language interspersed with Low German elements. The windmill and the linguistic tradition offer different ways to explore the area’s history and culture.
