Marsh landscapes with different features

The Cappelner Bruch is a 145-hectare protected landscape where you can go hiking. The Tenstedter Bruch in Cappeln-Tenstedt is considerably larger, at 470 hectares, and has a different character: floodplain and marsh woodland, small bodies of water and meadows make up its landscape. The Bakumer Bach flows through the area, which also provides a habitat for numerous endangered plant and animal species.

The two marsh areas offer different ways to experience the landscape: hiking is the explicitly mentioned activity at the Cappelner Bruch. The Tenstedter Bruch combines a larger area with a stream, bodies of water, meadows and marsh woodland. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose whether you are mainly looking for a hiking option or are interested in a diverse mosaic of landscapes and habitats.

Architectural history, horse breeding and remembrance

The parsonage in Cappeln can be placed in context using specific dates: it was built in 1711, extensively renovated in 2001, and is a delicately decorated half-timbered building opposite St. Peter and Paul Church. The combination of its construction date and renovation gives the building a historical context, while its half-timbered design and location opposite the church define its architectural character. Gestüt Vorwerk offers a different focus: it is Europe’s oldest private stallion stud farm and is well known beyond the region. Horse breeding thus adds another cultural theme to the local architectural heritage.

Quatmannsburg, an early to high medieval castle complex, is located in Elsten in the district of Cloppenburg. It is considered the best-preserved and most impressive complex of its kind in the district; the entire site is a listed monument. Compared with the parsonage built in 1711, the castle complex represents a different historical period and architectural style. In Sevelten, the granite monument by the artist Nickels of Cloppenburg commemorates the Eberborg story of 1929. The medieval castle complex, half-timbered building and 20th-century monument thus offer different points of cultural interest.

Garden visits by prior arrangement

The Landgarten Hof Sontag in Nutteln offers a different, garden-focused experience. It is set among woodland, meadows and farmland and features a stand of mature oak trees, various garden areas and colourful flower beds. Visits are possible by prior arrangement; please contact the garden in advance. Mature oaks and landscaped garden areas provide different points of interest on the grounds.
