Industrial history, a Gothic church and routes for cycling and nature experiences shape Hirzenhain. The town offers a wide range of discoveries: from the history of iron casting to a medieval rood screen and a circular trail with scenic views. The Nidder River and the reservoir are also part of the local landscape.

Iron Casting and Industrial History

The history of ironworking in Hirzenhain dates back to 1678, when Count Ludwig-Christian of Stolberg-Gedern built the first charcoal blast furnace here. Later, in 1947, the Buderus ironworks in Wetzlar established an art-casting department at their Hirzenhain plant. Monumental buildings in Buderus Park recall this industrial past.

The Hirzenhain Art Casting Museum focuses on presenting art castings “Made in Hirzenhain” from 1947 to 2015. The works on display also include sophisticated art castings dating from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The museum’s themes thus span the long history of this craft and its development in Hirzenhain during the 20th and early 21st centuries.

Church, Monastery Complex and Cultural Heritage

The former Augustinian monastery complex includes the former Catholic Marian pilgrimage church, which is now Protestant. Built in the Gothic style, it was consecrated in 1448. The former monastery and pilgrimage church is considered an outstanding cultural monument; its sandstone rood screen is a distinctive architectural feature.

The stone rood screen separated the canons’ gathering place from the area used by pilgrims and laypeople. Its function illustrates the historic division of the church interior. The protected Jewish cemetery is also part of the cultural heritage of the municipality of Hirzenhain. As a cultural monument, it documents the former diversity of local community life.

Circular Trail, Cycling and Water

The Iron Trail is a cultural-historical and geological circular trail between Gedern and Hirzenhain. Ten information boards and scenic views accompany the route. Hirzenhain has an access point to the Vogelsberg Arena network for mountain biking. Cyclists can also use an extensive mountain-bike network in the direction of Hoherodskopf. This offers different ways to explore the area: a circular trail covering cultural and geological themes, as well as mountain-bike routes.

The Nidder River flows through Hirzenhain. The reservoir right in town is a fishing spot, while the natural swimming pool is a popular destination for families and nature-loving swimmers. It is a seasonal attraction: the 2026 bathing season ended on August 30, and the municipality welcomed bathers back for summer 2027. If you are planning a stay during the bathing season, check the dates in advance.

The Wetterau as a Wider Setting

The Wetterau also offers regional nature and cycling opportunities. The nature reserves in the Wetterau district are accessible to visitors via information boards, observation points, and walking and cycling trails. The Bingenheimer Ried is one of the central areas of the “Auenverbund Wetterau” landscape conservation area. A network of regional and long-distance cycling routes crosses the Wetterau, and many of these routes are connected.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

Your preferred daily pace can help you choose a holiday apartment: if you are mainly interested in industrial and church history, Hirzenhain offers several distinctive themes to explore. For active days, the Iron Trail and mountain-bike networks offer different options, while water-based activities add a seasonal choice. When planning, you can decide whether culture, cycling or a stay by the water matters most for your trip, without having to fit every experience into a single itinerary.
