Neerdar combines rural tranquillity with unusual insights into regional history and craftsmanship. The village lies in the valley of the stream of the same name and is surrounded by mixed forests, meadows and gently rising hills. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Neerdar will find a place where nature experiences, culture and community traditions come together.

Between Charcoal Kilns and Charcoal Burning Craftsmanship

A special aspect of the village can be seen at the charcoal kiln site. Traditional charcoal kilns are built there at regular intervals. During demonstrations and events, visitors can learn more about this technique and its significance for the region. This makes the site an impressive destination for anyone who wants not only to admire the landscape, but also to learn about traditional technology and its significance for the region.

The Willingen–Neerdar hiking trail, known as N1 for short, also takes up this theme. The trail starts and ends at the Neerdar Village Community Centre at Neerdartalstraße 10, 34508 Willingen (Upland), and leads at around 600 metres above sea level to a charcoal kiln and an old kiln site. Along the way, it reveals traces of charcoal burning and ironworking crafts. The route is therefore particularly interesting to include in your travel plans if you would like to combine exercise with regional history.

Hiking Trails Through a Quiet Landscape

The area around Neerdar is characterised by peaceful valleys and hill landscapes. The gently rising hills and the mix of meadows and forests invite you to enjoy extended hikes. The Neerdar hiking car park serves as a starting point for various hiking trails within the Quality Region “Wanderbares Deutschland”. Another option is the Three-Village Trail, which runs through Neerdar, Bömighausen and Welleringhausen.

The choice of accommodation therefore depends above all on how you wish to organise your trip: Would you like to stay directly in a village setting, discover cultural features or combine hiking days with different themes? Neerdar offers several starting points for this, without limiting the trip to a single activity. The N1 focuses on craftsmanship and history, while the Three-Village Trail connects several places.

St. Pancratius Church with Significant Works of Art

St. Pancratius Church is part of Neerdar’s cultural heritage. It was built at the beginning of the 13th century according to the basic design of the stepped churches in the Upland region, with a rectangular nave and square choir. Inside, the Baroque altarpiece refers to the Waldeck Baroque artist Josias Wolrat Brützel. Its reverse bears the signature “Meister Josias Wolrat Brützel Anno 1692”; the altarpiece depicts the Last Judgement.

This art-historical impression is complemented by the sandstone baptismal font. It dates from the 17th century and bears the Waldeck star in the central panel. Those interested in ecclesiastical art, regional architectural history and handcrafted details can make these features a particular focus of their stay.

Barbecue Station and Local Traditions

The Neerdar barbecue station has a covered outdoor barbecue, a fire pit, as well as tables and benches. From there, visitors have a view of the village. Use of the facility must be registered in advance with the Neerdar local mayor. This is particularly important if you would like to include this site in your travel plans.

A local tradition of its own is the annual potato roasting at the barbecue station. During this sociable participatory tradition, potatoes are cooked directly in the hot fire. Such occasions give village life a culinary and communal dimension and complement the hiking and cultural themes with an experience centred on regional conviviality.

More Places for Planning Your Trip

If you would like to compare Neerdar with other places at the same destination level, you can also include Bömighausen, Eimelrod, Welleringhausen, Usseln, Rattlar and Schwalefeld in your further search. When choosing accommodation, the desired mix of tranquillity, hiking experiences, village culture and excursion destinations remains the decisive factor.
