Adorf combines geological features, historic buildings and varied paths to create a destination with many different discoveries. The district of the municipality of Diemelsee is located in Diemelsee Nature Park and is an ideal starting point for days when you want to combine nature, local history and informative insights into the region.

Geology and Local History in a Compact Thematic Area

In the town centre, the GeoFoyer Adorf provides information about the geological development of the region. The Martenbergklippe, also known as the “Rosenschlösschen”, is a special geological point of interest. It is listed as a natural geological monument, included as a geotope in the geotope register of the state of Hesse and is considered worldwide to be the type locality of the Adorf Stage. Those interested in the formation of landscapes and rocks will find an unusual focus for planning their trip here.

The history of the town can also be seen in several buildings. St. John's Church is a Romanesque pillar basilica from the 12th century and an important cultural and historical monument in Adorf. It formerly served in part as a fortified church. The church is accessible without barriers via the side entrance. The former castle complex in Adorf dates from 1335. The Alte Mühle, also known as Adorfer Mühle, is now an inn and, for historical reasons, is classified as a cultural monument under Section 2 (1) of the Hessian Monument Protection Act.

Two Circular Trails for Different Day Plans

The Adorf Nature and Cultural Trail consists of two interconnected circular trails. The outer circular trail around Adorf is approximately 12 kilometres long and is accompanied by 32 illustrated information panels on the geology, landscape, history and use of the surrounding area. The second circular trail runs for approximately 3 kilometres through the historic town centre and includes 13 information panels. This allows you to choose the longer route if the landscape and geological topics are the main focus, or plan the shorter circuit for a concentrated tour of the town.

Other nature- and history-related attractions include the former gypsum and alabaster mine “Auf den Pöhlen”, which is now a nature reserve. The Christiane Mine visitor mine has an interactive information centre with hands-on stations about mining and the working life of miners. Special and group tours at Christiane Mine are available for groups of 12 or more by prior arrangement. For a family trip, it may be useful to choose between the circular trail, the information panels and the interactive stations according to interests and the rhythm of the day.

On the Way between the Mine, Martenberg and Adorf

The Diemelsteig runs along the L3076 towards the “Christiane” Mine visitor mine, past the entrance to the “Pferdestollen” mine and onwards towards Martenberg. Before the Martenbergklippe, the trail descends to Adorf. This route connects several of the topics mentioned above in a long-distance hiking route, without requiring every outing to be planned in the same way. Those who prefer a set town walk with explanatory panels will find a differently structured option in the Nature and Cultural Trail.

The journey can also be organised in different ways. From the railway stations in Korbach or Bad Arolsen, you can continue to Adorf by bicycle, bus or the AnrufSammelTaxi. When looking for a holiday apartment in Adorf, it is therefore worth first deciding on your preferred focus: a brief look at local history, geological insights, a longer circular trail or a combination with the Diemelsteig. This means that your choice of accommodation can be aligned with the type of trip you have planned, without committing yourself to just one experience.
