City Wall, Market Square and History

The historic center is laid out in a ring and surrounded by a walkable city wall with defensive towers. An ensemble of half-timbered town hall and half-timbered houses defines the townscape around the market square. The wall and the buildings convey different impressions: here, Herbstein appears as a fortified town center; there, as a place with a distinctive historic market-square ensemble.

Beneath the market square is a vaulted cellar, considered a noteworthy geotope and forming the preserved underground remains of an earlier castle. The castle vault dates from the 13th century. The STATT Museum offers a chance to experience evidence of 750 years of Herbstein’s city history, including the market-square ensemble and the underground castle vault. The town’s architectural history and the surviving castle remains thus stand side by side as tangible themes for exploring the past.

Herbstein’s Foaselt is also part of the town’s history: this carnival tradition dates back to the 17th century. It includes a Springerzug procession led by the Bajazz. For anyone interested in regional customs, this offers another distinct facet of Herbstein alongside its historic buildings.

Hiking and Volcanic Landscapes

For an active exploration, Herbstein’s “Felsentour” Extra Tour offers a concrete route. The moderately difficult hiking route is 19.0 kilometers long, with a stated duration of 5:30 hours. It passes right by Felsenruhe. This natural monument lies northwest of Herbstein on the southern slope of Kirchwald and forms a rock face up to 8 meters high. Felsenruhe is easily accessible to walkers and hikers. If you would like to plan your day around a longer hike, you can take these route details into account.

Access to the Felsentour at the Herbstein thermal baths is served by bus routes VB-48 and 391, as well as the Vulkan-Express routes VB-90 and VB-91. The Vulkanradweg also offers a view of Herbstein’s townscape. This vista complements the hiking perspective with an impression of the town from its surroundings.

Spa Park and VulkanTherme

The spa park is located directly in front of the VulkanTherme. It offers spacious walking routes, and several hiking trails begin in the park, including terrain therapy paths. For recreation in the park, there is also a miniature golf course, a Pit-Pat course and a disc golf course. This gives you a choice of walks, hiking trails and various facilities, rather than limiting your stay to a single activity.

The VulkanTherme is supplied with therapeutic water at around 32.6 °C from a depth of more than 1,000 meters. The VulkanSauna features a low-temperature steam bath, a classic Finnish sauna, a bio sauna with fragrance and aromatherapy, and an outdoor log sauna. Regular water aerobics classes are offered at the VulkanTherme and are included in the admission price.
