Wartenberg: Hiking Trails, Local History and Castle Ruins

Wartenberg combines hiking with local history and a striking geological setting. Wartenberg Castle Ruins lie between Angersbach and Bad Salzschlirf in the geologically significant Lauterbach Graben. They stand on a mountain spur of the Birkich that projects 300 m into the valley. The trail thus combines nature and history, so you do not have to limit your hiking choice to just one of these themes. For a shorter route, the approximately 5 km “Historic Trail” is marked. It leads through the town to Wartenberg Castle Ruins and forms part of the Zeitpfad. The “Historic Trail through Angersbach” presents the town’s history since 812 with the help of numerous information boards. Photographs also show changes over the past century. The trail therefore highlights both a broad span of history and a comparison of more recent changes. The “Poetry Sun Trail” offers a different cultural perspective: it was created in 2014 by the Landenhausen Cultural Association and has since been updated each year with new poems and texts by well-known and regional artists. Circular Routes, Trail Conditions and Outdoor Pool

The “Wartenberg Panorama Trail” is a circular route around both districts, intended for hikers, horse riders, mountain bikers and Nordic walkers. The “Wartenberg Hiking Trails 1–5” are also circular routes around Wartenberg. All five cross the Panorama Trail and can be combined with it. Trail conditions are also relevant when choosing a route: sections of the Panorama Trail are paved and are also suitable for wheelchair users, inline skaters, strollers and touring bikes. The steep steps at Sonnberg in Angersbach can be avoided by taking an alternative route, which is signposted. These details apply to sections of the route or to the steps described, not to the entire circular trail.

Another day-trip destination for visitors of different ages is the Landenhausen outdoor pool in the Landenhausen district. Facilities include a swimming pool with diving blocks, a non-swimmer pool and a paddling pool for children; the pool is heated. This lets you combine hiking and history with a visit to the outdoor pool when planning a group holiday, without needing to follow a set daily itinerary.
