Alsfeld: Half-timbered houses, fairy tales and city history
Accommodation in Alsfeld
Alsfeld combines an impressive half-timbered history with fairy-tale themes, churches and a recreation area on the outskirts of town. More than 400 half-timbered houses dating from seven centuries still shape the townscape today. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can start by considering what you want your holiday to focus on: Should the town’s history set the tone, are you drawn to fairy tales and performances, or would you also like to include bodies of water and sunbathing lawns in your daily plans?
Half-timbered houses and city history
Alsfeld’s historic town hall was built between 1512 and 1516 and is one of Germany’s most significant half-timbered town halls. The churches also give the town’s history different accents: the Walpurgis Church is Alsfeld’s main town church. The traditional rocking of the Christ Child and May horn-blowing are associated with it. The Trinity Church was formerly the monastery church of the Augustinian Hermits.
Another half-timbered house with its own theme is the Alsfeld Fairy Tale House, built in 1628. Fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm are depicted in every room across two floors. In Alsfeld, the historic townscape and well-known stories thus meet: half-timbered houses shape the streetscape, while the Fairy Tale House puts Grimm’s fairy tales centre stage.
Fairy tales, guided tours and film
On a fairy-tale-themed guided tour of Alsfeld, a guide shares stories from the town’s history. The Alsfeld Market Theatre Group also performs fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, including Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Rumpelstiltskin and The Frog Prince. The formats are therefore different: the stories are depicted in the rooms of the Fairy Tale House, while the guided tour also brings in the town’s history and performances. If you want to make the tour a firm part of your plans, check current availability in advance.
Film themes offer another way to explore the area: Alsfeld was the main filming location for the feature film DIE WOLF-GÄNG; the Wolf-Gäng Tour takes visitors to locations featured in the film and filming sites. The Alsfeld Salzekuchen Festival in the historic old town is dedicated to Salzekuchen. Coffee, various cakes and rustic farmhouse breads are also offered there to taste and buy. As festival dates may vary, check the specific dates if you want the festival to determine when you travel.
Recreation and the surrounding area
On the outskirts of town, the Erlenteich recreation area includes bodies of water, sunbathing lawns and wooded areas. From the half-timbered town of Alsfeld, the Antriftal Reservoir is just a few kilometres away. This means that, alongside half-timbered houses, churches and fairy-tale themes, bodies of water and green spaces can also be separate focal points for your daily plans. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these interests you want to shape your holiday days.
The wider Vogelsberg destination
The wider Vogelsberg destination offers a broader look at volcanic landscapes and activities. The Vogelsberg is Europe’s largest volcanic region; the Vogelsberg mountain hay meadows are the largest protected areas of their kind in Hesse. In Schotten, the interactive Volcano Museum explains volcanism. Its multimedia exhibition explores volcanism and geology in the Vogelsberg; visitors can experience the past first-hand at various experiment stations and interactive exhibits.
The treetop path on the Hoherodskopf in Schotten is 500 metres long and features suspension bridges. At the Hoherodskopf high ropes course, nature and adventure enthusiasts can climb from tree to tree under the guidance of trained professionals. The hiking trails also differ in length and character: the Schotten Summit Tour covers 14 kilometres and four peaks in the Oberwald, as well as species-rich mountain meadows and varied woodland with rugged basalt formations. The Ulrichstein Panoramic Views Tour is shorter at 11.6 kilometres and is a moderate circular trail around Ulrichstein through deciduous forests and varied small-scale landscapes.
