The castle landscape gives Wallenstein its distinctive character: the castle ruins stand on a mountain spur below the Babloh, and large sections of the imposing shield wall remain at the almost square inner castle. Around the castle, the Schlossbrunnenweg combines a hike with historic sights and views of the Knüll Mountains. Those looking for a longer route and a gorge landscape will find a different focus on the Lochbach Trail. Wallenstein can thus be discovered through its castle and the varied experiences offered by its trails.

Castle and Schlossbrunnenweg

The 4.8-kilometre Schlossbrunnenweg is a certified premium hiking trail for leisurely walks and an easy circular route. It starts below the castle in Knüll Nature Park and leads around Wallenstein Castle. The mostly natural trails take you to the historic Schlossbrunnen and the castle ruins; along the way, there are views of the Knüll Mountains and Wallenstein. The circular route, well and castle bring landscape and history together in one hike.

The ruins’ location is also a striking feature: outside the castle walls, the ground drops steeply on three sides. Together with the surviving sections of the imposing shield wall, the site is defined by its architectural remains and its position on the mountain spur. Visitors can take in both aspects: the surviving wall of the almost square inner castle and the steeply sloping terrain around the walls.

Lochbach Trail and Lochbach Gorge

The 8.3-kilometre Lochbach Trail starts at the Wallenstein hiking car park. Its section through the Lochbach Gorge follows narrow paths and crosses numerous boardwalks and bridges through a narrow ravine along a small, natural stream. Here, the stream, the shape of the valley and the changing transitions define the trail. Compared with the 4.8-kilometre Schlossbrunnenweg, the Lochbach Trail is the longer route, with the gorge providing its own distinctive landscape focus.

If the castle and the two hiking trails are your main destinations, you can use Wallenstein as a location when searching for a holiday apartment. When planning your day, consider whether the shorter circular route with the well and castle or the longer route through the Lochbach Gorge better suits your plans. The route lengths and landscapes described offer different points of reference.

Cycling tour, medieval games and natural swimming pool

There is also a cycling tour to the castle: Wallenstein Castle is the destination of the Efze-Vital Cycle Route, a point-to-point ride. Since 2000, the Burg Wallenstein e. V. village association has held annual medieval games with a medieval market at the castle. If you would like to combine your trip with this event, check the specific dates before making plans. There is also a natural swimming pool below the castle ruins. Check before visiting to see whether swimming is currently possible.
