Discover Stadtallendorf: Moorland, Forest and History
Accommodation in Stadtallendorf
Stadtallendorf brings together nature experiences and very different stories: rare bird species live in Schweinsberger Moor, traces of former explosives factories can be found in Herrenwald, and historic buildings tell of changing times. This offers different focal points for planning your trip – from a circular walk through forest and a world of legends to churches, a castle and a memorial site.
Moorland and rare birds
Schweinsberger Moor covers 43.2 hectares. It was designated a nature reserve in 1977, making it Hesse’s 100th nature reserve. Snipe and marsh harrier are among the rare bird species that live and breed there. The combination of a clearly stated area, protected status and birdlife makes the moor a distinctive nature highlight for a stay in Stadtallendorf. If landscape and wildlife are your main interests, you can take this into account when choosing your itinerary.
Hiking trails with different stories
The Hatzbacher Sagenweg is an 8.8-kilometre circular trail with only slight elevation changes. Its twelve sites feature old Hatzbach legends; a small sign at each location provides information about the story. A signposting system guides you along the trail without a map. The circular route therefore combines exercise with short storytelling stops rather than focusing solely on a continuous sightseeing tour.
The Forster Weg offers a different historical trail. The circular route leads into Herrenwald, where bunkers and relics of the former explosives factories lie among the trees. Herrenwald is designated a Special Area of Conservation (FFH site) and serves as a protected habitat for wildlife and plant life, helping to preserve biodiversity. Nature and industrial history offer two distinct themes to consider when planning a day in the forest.
The Forster Weg also includes destinations with religious significance: wooden signs point hikers to the “Riesenstein” hiking destination. The “Mariabild” forest chapel is a place where regular services have been held for many years. The Mariengrotte Stadtallendorf lies at the upper end of a long sunken lane; this is one section of the Forster Weg from the old town to the forest chapel in Herrenwald. Stadtallendorf is also a stop on the Jakobsweg and Elisabethpfad pilgrimage routes.
Buildings and places of remembrance
The Baroque Church of St. Catherine gives the town a specific historical timeframe: construction of the new church began in 1732, and the first service was held in 1735. In Niederklein, the fortified church of St. Blaise and St. Elizabeth has several distinctive features. A pitch-dispensing opening on the church tower, arrow slits and a thick wall around the churchyard with bricked-up gates suggest that it was a fortified church.
The Hexenturm, a small outer bailey, the entire outer wall of the zwinger and large sections of its inner wall have survived at Schweinsberg Castle. At the same time, due to its radical reconstruction, the castle is now considered more a significant example of Romanticism and early Historicism than a late medieval castle. This perspective draws attention not only to the surviving walls but also to the building’s later character.
The DIZ and the Münchmühle Memorial Site offer opportunities to engage with more recent history. During its regular opening hours, Tuesday to Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the DIZ offers tours of its permanent exhibition on forced labour and the Nazi armaments industry. Tours can be arranged by appointment outside these days and hours. The DIZ also offers town tours by appointment for groups of four or more. The Münchmühle Memorial Site was established in 1988 on the site of the former Münchmühle camp.
A break in Heinz-Lang-Park
Heinz-Lang-Park brings together a range of facilities: event areas, a skate plaza, wooden decks by the lake, a boules court and toilets, as well as a special playground. The “Piratennest” features, among other things, a wooden shipwreck, wooden palm trees, a nest swing and other play equipment. For families who want to include a playground in their stay, these specific features make the park a destination in its own right.
When choosing your holiday apartment, you can consider which side of Stadtallendorf interests you most: the moor’s birdlife, trails through legends and forest, or the history of its buildings and places of remembrance.
