Castle, museum and half-timbered houses
Landgrave’s Castle in Biedenkopf was built by Henry III of Hesse-Marburg in the mid-15th century and is one of the State of Hesse’s significant cultural monuments. An architectural history tour leads through the entire castle and explains its architectural features. The Hinterland Museum is also located in the castle. Founded in 1908 as a regional museum, it presents the regional and cultural history of the Hinterland. Its main themes include industry, transport, agriculture and crafts, as well as traditional costumes, housing and everyday culture.
Another glimpse into architectural history awaits at the Schenkbar House, the oldest house in Biedenkopf. The five-storey half-timbered building was constructed in two clearly distinct phases: the two lower floors date from 1491, while Amtmann Schenkbar had the three upper floors added in 1610. The private museum opens its interiors and icon collection to visitors by appointment. It has no regular opening hours.
In the district of Eckelshausen stands the Schartenhof, over 300 years old and one of the region’s historically significant half-timbered buildings in Marburg-Biedenkopf, Hesse. Today, it is home to art, culture and music, and serves as a creative hub. Its cultural programme includes a marionette theatre performing classical operas. Views and circular trails on the Sackpfeife
The Kaiser Wilhelm Tower marks the highest point of the Sackpfeife. From its viewing platform, the panorama stretches across the ridges of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, the Lahn-Dill-Bergland Nature Park and the Marburg region. From the viewpoint on the Sackpfeife, the view extends across the ridges of the Slate Mountains and the Marburg uplands; on clear days, you can see as far as the Taunus. A large car park on the Sackpfeife is the starting point for three circular hiking trails of varying lengths. When planning your day, you can choose from the available trail lengths without assuming a particular walking time.
The Biedenkopf Baby Forest is also located on the Sackpfeife. It currently comprises 55 sycamore and Norway maple trees.
Perfstausee reservoir: water, cycling routes and nature
A range of activities are available at the Perfstausee reservoir. You can explore the lake in non-motorised boats or on stand-up paddleboards. A beach volleyball court and a disc golf course are also available. The lake lies at the intersection of numerous regional and long-distance cycling routes, making it a popular destination for bike rides. One section is part of the “Im Wehr bei Breidenstein” nature reserve, which provides protected habitat, particularly for waterbirds. Depending on your interests, you can focus your visit on exercise, water sports or taking in views of this protected habitat.
Traditions and discoveries
One of Biedenkopf’s distinctive traditions is the Grenzgang, celebrated every seven years. Participants organise a three-day festival at historic forest venues, where locals and visitors come together. This offers a different way to experience the town than visiting a museum or going for a hike: the focus here is on celebrating together and the tradition itself.
In Biedenkopf-Kombach, a play area with installed games at the shelter brings to life the true story of the Kombach postal robbers.
