Wetter (Hesse) combines a historic town center with stories that come to life in specific places. The collegiate church has stood on Klosterberg since the 13th century; other sites include the former synagogue and the Diebsturm tower. For planning your trip, one clear focus suggests itself: explore Wetter on a town walk, visit historic sites and enjoy outdoor activities.

History in specific places

The town of Wetter acquired the former synagogue in 2000; it was extensively restored as part of the Old Town renovation. The Träger- und Förderverein ehemalige Synagoge Wetter e. V. (Association for the Preservation and Support of the Former Synagogue in Wetter) is dedicated to its preservation and use as a memorial, place of learning and venue for cultural encounters. This work connects the preservation of the historic building with remembrance and cultural exchange.

Another historical trace leads to the Diebsturm tower: in the 18th century, citizens of Wetter were imprisoned there. The tower was probably used as a prison until the beginning of the 19th century. The collegiate church, former synagogue and Diebsturm represent different chapters of the town’s history; you can explore the historic Old Town on your own or as part of a guided town tour.

Town walk, cycle route and views

A walk is one way to get to know the historic Old Town at your own pace; a guided town tour is the alternative with a guide. If you’d like to plan a longer route in addition to exploring the town, the Treisbachtal cycle route is a specific option: it is 21 kilometers long and runs from Biedenkopf to Wetter, or in the opposite direction.

Along the Extratour Stirnhelle, the viewpoints at Stirnhelle (387 m), Gerlachsberg (387 m) and Am Rienert (285 m) offer views of the Burgwald, Mellnau Castle and the town of Wetter. The listed elevations and sights give this route a different focus from the cycle route, with its two endpoints. Another excursion option near Wetter is the adjacent Burgwald, including Christenberg.

If you’d like to include other destinations in the wider Marburg-Biedenkopf destination, their own landscape and cultural attractions may also influence your choice of where to stay.

If you’d like to combine hiking and scenery, you could also consider the Himmelsbergtour in the wider destination. This 18-kilometer premium hiking trail is in the Burgwald region and passes through Burgholz and Himmelsberg. Forests, meadows and fields define the route, which also runs through a Natura 2000 protected area. Its length and route provide clear guidance for anyone planning a longer hike as a separate part of their trip.

Culture enthusiasts can visit the Schartenhof in Biedenkopf-Eckelshausen, a more than 300-year-old half-timbered building of historical significance in the region. Today, it is a center for art, culture and music. Its offerings include seasonal exhibitions of work from the region, as well as exhibitions of painting, photography, graphic art and sculpture; there are also puppet theater performances of classical operas. In Biedenkopf, the museum in the castle presents 900 years of cultural history from the Hinterland region across 1,000 m².

A distinctive tradition in Biedenkopf is the Grenzgang, celebrated every seven years. The three-day festival takes place at historic forest sites, bringing together locals and visitors from around the world. Alongside its cultural destinations and natural attractions, Marburg-Biedenkopf is a wider destination with its own themes and places beyond Wetter.
