In Lahntal, village history and hiking experiences meet a striking landscape. Goßfelden: Ubbelohde motifs and an old bridge
The old bridge in Goßfelden is a local landmark. On its eastern side, the year 1802 can be seen in Roman numerals. It can only be crossed on foot or by bicycle.
Opened in June 2010, the circular trail “In the Footsteps of Otto Ubbelohde through Goßfelden” begins at the museum in the Lahn meadows. At around 1.5 kilometres long, it has 16 stops and runs mainly through old Goßfelden. The trail presents Ubbelohde’s drawings, illustrations and paintings at places in the village where their subjects—including fairy-tale illustrations—can still be recognised, or seem to be recognisable again. The walk thus combines a glimpse into the artist’s visual world with the places associated with it.
Caldern: two circular hiking trails and history along the way
The L1 circular hiking trail runs from Caldern to Dilschhausen and back to Caldern. Along its 12.9 kilometres are two churches, the “Paradies” and the historic peak of the Rimberg Tower. The family-friendly L3 circular trail is 6.7 kilometres long and follows paved paths through fields and woodland; along the way, there are views of Caldern. If you’re looking for a shorter route, consider the L3, while the L1 is the longer circuit.
Caldern’s architectural history is also in evidence: a section of the former monastery wall remains beside St Nicholas Church, and the remnants of the wall have been restored. The monastery mill has been mentioned as a mill since 1389 and originally belonged to the Cistercian monastery. In Sterzhausen, the church’s current nave is a Neoclassical hall building dating from 1936; its characteristic features include semicircular windows.
Wollenberg and Wichtelhäuser: woodland and rocks
The entirely wooded Wollenberg lies north of Lahntal. It can be reached directly from almost all of Lahntal’s districts, and numerous circular hiking trails lead through the woodland. The Wollenberg is also home to the more than 20-metre-high Schenk Oak. It is named after the forest ranger Johannes Schenk, who kept watch over the Wollenberg woodland until 1928.
A signposted hiking trail leads from Brungershausen to the “Wichtelhäuser,” an imposing rock formation. The rocks lie a little way off the forest path, invite visitors to climb, and offer views across the Lahn valley, of Kernbach and of the opposite Rimberg. In Lahntal, then, woodland paths, rock formations and expansive views are all possible highlights for a day trip.
