Explore the forest together
The forest bird trail in Hofheim’s municipal forest is located at the end of Breckenheimer Straße, in the direction of Sportpark Heide. It is freely accessible and features seven learning stations about forest birds and the forest as a habitat. The stations give your walk a specific focus: they highlight both the birds and the habitat in which they live.
A rally following the trail of the tawny owl can be booked for children’s groups and families at the forest bird trail. It is 2.5 km long and takes about two to three hours. This is a way to give your time outdoors a particular goal; you can factor the route and approximate duration into your day’s plans.
At Hofheim’s forest garden, plants and animals are presented as part of a diverse habitat. The site is also a place for learning and relaxation. A forest and species conservation educational trail shares information about forest and species conservation through more than 40 illustrated information panels with text. If you are interested in how nature works, you will find a different focus here than on the forest bird trail.
Kapellenberg: archaeology in the landscape
Kapellenberg was one of the largest settlements of the Michelsberg culture, dating from 4200 to 3500 BC. The site covered 45 hectares, of which 26 hectares were built up. The former ramparts are still visible in the landscape. A four-kilometre archaeological circular trail, with information panels, leads through the history of Hofheim’s local mountain and its settlement, which dates back to the Neolithic period. The visible traces in the landscape and the explanations along the way offer two ways to explore the past: seeing the site itself and learning about its history.
The Bergkapelle chapel is also located on Kapellenberg. From the hiking trail on Kreuzweg, you can reach it via a steep footpath in about five minutes. The Cohausentempel temple stands in the forest on Kapellenberg and can be reached via hiking trails. Information about the footpath and its incline can be especially useful when deciding whether to include a visit to the Bergkapelle in your plans.
Local history and culture
Opened in 1993, the Hofheim Town Museum is right next to the historic Kellereibezirk district. Its permanent exhibition covers art, archaeology and local history. The museum is within walking distance of the bus and train stations. If you would prefer to discover Hofheim on a guided tour, you can join one of the expert-led town tours, where visitors learn a great deal about the town and its history.
Another way to spend your time is at the Rhein-Main-Therme in Hofheim am Taunus, at Niederhofheimer Straße 67. Its facilities include an aquatic adventure world as well as sauna, fitness and wellness facilities. Alongside walks and history-themed activities, you can also choose from water-based and wellness offerings.
Plan your routes and journey
The “Mensch und Erde” (“People and Earth”) hiking trail connects the town centre of Hofheim am Taunus with Lorsbach, the town’s northern district. It features information panels about geological history and a digital layer of additional information. An information leaflet available since 2020 helps explain how the landscape around Hofheim developed. The trail combines a hike between two town districts with insights into the area’s geological history.
