Laneburg and the coin hoard
Laneburg was first mentioned in a document in 1324. It was expanded in the style of a castle in the 16th and early 17th centuries and briefly served as a secondary residence of Nassau-Dillenburg. This castle-style expansion marks a later period than its first documented mention and gives the castle a history extending into the early modern period.
A remarkable discovery adds to this historical focus: the Löhnberg coin hoard consists of 2,011 silver coins. It was discovered in 2000 during renovation work at Schloss Laneburg and is considered a valuable cultural heritage. Since 2010, the hoard has been on permanent display in the business premises of the Kreissparkasse Weilburg in Löhnberg. When planning your trip, you can thus connect the history of the castle with the town’s coin history without confusing the dates of the two events.
Water Museum and Sauerborn
The Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus Geopark is also represented in Löhnberg in two different ways. Since 2017, the Löhnberg Water Museum has been a Geopoint of the Geopark. The natural mineral spring Sauerborn was named Geotope of the Year by the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus Geopark in 2018. The museum and mineral spring thus offer different connections to the subjects of water and the Geopark.
Sauerborn is located directly on the long-distance cycle route R7. If you are interested in cycling, you can take this into account when choosing the focus of your holiday. The spring links a specific natural site with the cycle route; its Geotope of the Year award is part of its own history.
Hiking, cycling and views
Trails in the Kallenbach Valley near Löhnberg invite you to hike and cycle. They offer different options for days when you would like to get around on foot or by bike. The 18-metre-high Löhnberg observation tower offers a different perspective: it has four viewing platforms and provides views across the entire Lahn and Kallenbach valleys.
The valley trails and the view from the tower offer two different ways to experience the landscape. Boating on the Lahn is another leisure activity in Löhnberg.
