A visit can therefore combine an interest in native wildlife and birds of prey, while offering two distinct experiences: the park showcases a variety of species, while the flying displays feature birds in free flight.

The Urwaldsteig Edersee offers a more extensive experience of nature. The entire trail is 66 kilometres long and can be explored in eight stages with rangers from Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. These details help you gauge the scale of the undertaking and plan your trip accordingly. Ancient beech and oak trees, moss-covered roots, unusual rock outcrops and clear springs shape the natural landscape along the national park’s cycling and hiking trails. The blue of Lake Edersee shimmers through the trees again and again.

Castles, Collections and Landscape Art

At Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, monumental water features and the Herkules statue, visible from far away, make a striking example of absolutist landscape architecture. Löwenburg Castle, an artificial castle ruin, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. It was built between 1793 and 1801 as a pleasure palace, not as a fortress. Those interested in architectural history will find a structure deliberately designed as a ruin, with an original purpose different from what the name “castle” might initially suggest.

The Friedrichstein Castle Museum focuses on military and hunting history. Its collection of Hessian military history includes weapons, uniforms, medals and paintings from the 16th to the 19th century; the Turcica collection includes a richly decorated audience tent. Please note that Friedrichstein Castle can only be visited as part of a guided tour. The last tour starts at 3:30 p.m. In Marburg, Landgrave Castle offers another cultural highlight: the medieval residence of the Hessian landgraves now houses a museum with historic rooms. Bus 10 runs up to the castle.
