Historic buildings and insights into the town

The town hall is a Renaissance building with a turbulent history: after it was destroyed in 1547, it was rebuilt on the same site in 1570, on a larger scale. The historic post mile column dates from 1725. It recalls Niemegk’s former affiliation with Electoral Saxony and stands out alongside the town hall.

St. John’s Church stands out for its red brickwork and tall, slender tower, which shapes the town’s skyline. It is a stop on the signposted town tour. To register and collect the key, contact the parish office at Kirchplatz 9; it can be reached by telephone on 033843-51338. Anyone interested in architectural styles and local history can include this stop alongside the town hall and post mile column.

The historic water tower houses the Fizz Museum. Exhibits include machines for filling and cleaning bottles, bottle-closing devices and a collection of historic glass bottles. The water tower is listed as a protected monument. The farm shop there also offers regional specialities to sample and buy. Niemegk outdoor swimming pool is located at the historic water tower.

Hiking and cycling around Niemegk

Nature Park Circular Hiking Trail 44 leads around Niemegk through flowering meadows and pastures, as well as small patches of woodland. The route passes the Fläming streams Buffbach and Adda and offers frequent views. Look for the trail marker to find your way: a red 44 with hills on a white square. If you enjoy walking, this trail is a great way to experience meadows, woodland and streams on a single outing.

For a cycling trip, the 29-kilometre Fieldstone Churches Cycling Tour starts in Niemegk and takes you to seven typical Fläming fieldstone churches in the southern nature park. It has been signposted since 2017. The churches give the tour a cultural destination, making it a different option from a walking tour of the buildings in town. You can decide whether hiking or cycling is a better fit for your stay based on which of these experiences you would like to focus on.

Festivals and theatre programme

Niemegk hosts many festivals every year, including the town festival in early May and Oktoberfest. If you choose your travel dates to coincide with one of these events, bear the dates in mind: the town festival takes place in early May, and Oktoberfest is also part of the annual festival calendar.

Since 2004, the former cultural centre has been home to the Niemegk People’s Theatre association. It presents its own productions, guest performances by theatre groups, musicals and concerts. Together with the historic sights, the theatre programme offers another way to shape your stay around cultural activities.

Getting here and choosing where to stay

By public transport, take the RE 7 to Bad Belzig, then continue to Niemegk on bus 572 or 582. By car, you can reach the town via its own exit on the A9.
