Wulkow combines the history of a baroque estate with an old palace park, distinctive natural features and unusual architecture. The estate ensemble shapes the historic village centre, while a Domespace reminiscent of a flying saucer adds a very different accent. This gives you several themes to choose from when planning your holiday: architectural history and garden culture, art and events, or nature and cycling.

The Estate’s History in the Historic Village Centre

The historic village centre is shaped by a baroque estate ensemble, which is also considered a tourist attraction. The listed estate ensemble includes a manor house with a park, a farmyard with a granary, a wheelwright’s workshop and two farm buildings; the heritage list records these components as of 1 January 2026. Also prominent are the listed village church, dating from 1687, and a burial chapel built in 1695, bearing the family coat of arms. The Protestant church contains a high altar retable dating from around 1700.

It was only after Richard Schulz’s alterations in the early 20th century that the baroque manor house became a castle-like residence. This makes it possible to distinguish the manor house’s baroque origins from its later castle-like appearance. The architectural history of the village centre therefore encompasses both the estate ensemble and the distinct features of the church and burial chapel.

Palace Park, Wild Pear Tree and Garden History

Wulkow’s palace park is about 300 years old and has a listed collection of trees. Wulkow is also home to the largest wild pear tree in the state. The palace park also contains a German war cemetery, which was expanded in 1977. These themes of nature and remembrance sit alongside the buildings of the estate heritage and add further facets to the village.

The former orangery belonged to the palace’s former garden nursery. The greenhouse, or orangery, was used, among other things, to house exotic potted plants. The estate ensemble’s history therefore includes historic plant cultivation as well as its buildings and trees.

Unusual Architecture, Art and Culture

The Domespace, also known in Wulkow as the “UFO,” is reminiscent of a flying saucer. Its form adds a different architectural accent from the baroque estate ensemble. At the Jannulis Tembridis studio, sculptures are made from stone, marble and terracotta. Works are available to buy; if you are interested in purchasing one, check the current sales options in advance.

Since 2017, the Ökospeicher has hosted the book talk “I’m reading something you’re not reading.” There is also an e-bike charging station at the Ökospeicher; check whether the service is available before you travel. In connection with the charging station, a roughly 10 km section of the Oder-Neiße Cycle Route is suggested for cycling or skating.

Easter and Christmas markets are associated with the old granary. It is best to check specific dates before you travel. This allows you to consider art, culture and cycling ideas as different focuses for your stay, without assuming a set itinerary.

More Landscape Themes in the Wider Lebus Destination

In the wider Lebus destination, the “Steppe Flora in the Lebus Region” Natura Trail offers a distinct focus on nature and outdoor activities. The 36 km circular cycle route connects four Sites of Community Importance (SCIs) of European importance: the Oderberge Lebus Nature Reserve, the Zeisigberg Nature Reserve, the Preister Gorge and the Oder slopes at Mallnow. The section in Lebus runs along the Oder-Neiße Cycle Route to the Podelzig-Klessin exit.

In spring, pasque flowers are the first to bloom on the Oder slopes near Mallnow; later, horned violets and primroses follow. From the castle hill in Lebus, there are panoramic views along the Oder and far into Poland. These landscape and nature themes belong to Lebus and complement the story of Wulkow’s estate history, without attributing features of one place to the other. Check current route information before setting out.
