Barmsee is a swimming lake in Krün. On its north-west shore, there is a sunbathing lawn with views of the mountains of the Alpenwelt Karwendel region. You can reach the lake from Krün on foot or by bicycle. Swimming is a summer activity, so if it is important to your trip, take this into account when choosing when to travel.
Trails through nature and the landscape
The Isar Nature Adventure Trail is an easy, 7.4-kilometre circular route that starts and ends in the centre of Krün. Themed areas and interactive stations introduce visitors to the habitat and natural environment in and around the Isar in a fun way. Check the route information before setting off, as it may not always be up to date.
Another option is the very easy, 3.2-kilometre hike from the town centre to the Maria Rast Chapel and through the Buckelwiesen meadows near Krün. It is shorter than the Isar loop and leads to a named destination; the routes also have different difficulty ratings: the hike is very easy, while the Isar Nature Adventure Trail is easy. This lets you compare the routes by length, character and the landscape theme you are looking for.
The Kieselsteinlehrpfad (pebble learning trail) near Krün runs alongside the turquoise-green Isar. Several information boards provide geological information, and interactive stations are aimed at explorers of all ages. This gives the trail a different focus from the Isar Nature Adventure Trail: geology is at the heart of one, while the other focuses on the habitat in and around the Isar.
Culture in Krün
St. Sebastian’s Church in the centre of Krün is worth a visit. Its interior features understated Rococo decoration. The Krüner Bauerntheater offers another side of local culture: its comedies in the Bavarian dialect make audiences young and old laugh.

The Richard Strauss Institute is housed in the historic Villa Christina in Partenkirchen’s spa gardens. It features a permanent exhibition about Strauss’s life and work. The Werdenfels Museum in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was established in 1895 from a private collection and is now one of the most important museums of its kind in Bavaria. The original Zugspitze summit cross, weighing 150 kilograms, is on display in the Zugspitze room.
