Klais: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
At the eastern edge of Klais, a partially excavated section of the Roman Via Raetia can be seen and walked along. It dates from around 200 AD; the wheel ruts of ancient vehicles are still visible.
Culture
The excavations of the Via Raetia in Klais also uncovered the remains of a Benedictine monastery founded in connection with Scharnitz, whose existence is documented from 29 June 763 to 772. A bronze plaque commemorates it. St. Peter and Paul is located near Klais. In the wider region surrounding Klais are the Tyrolean State Museum and the Golden Roof.
A simple historical walk leads from Klais along the Roman road towards Elmau. The local tourism organisation also promotes a walking tour in the area focusing on the history of Klais.
Landscape
Schmalseehöhe, Rindberg and Kleiner Kranzberg are located near Klais. The Untere Wettersteinspitze is situated in the surrounding area of Klais.
Activities
From Klais, visitors can cycle towards Kranzbach and Elmau, with views towards the Wetterstein mountains; longer extensions lead towards Ferchensee and Lautersee. In winter, Klais offers cross-country skiing, including the documented Klais–Kaltenbrunn loop.
Klais has a railway station built in 1912 at an altitude of 933 metres. From the station, the visible Roman road and nearby paths can be explored; cycling routes in the surrounding area of Klais are also described.
