Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen: Roman heritage on a broader scale
In the wider destination of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, the Limes stretches across the district for around 40 kilometres and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. Numerous Roman watchtowers, forts and fragments of bathhouses also bear witness to Roman history. Weißenburg’s Roman heritage also includes the Roman Baths; Biriciana Fort has been partially reconstructed.
A different historical perspective awaits at the old Ansbach Hohenzollern fortress of Wülzburg, above Weißenburg. It stands on the highest hilltop in the southern Franconian Alb, at 630 metres, and is a monument to Renaissance fortress architecture in Germany. Weather permitting, guided tours are offered there from May to October. If you would like to include one, check the dates before your trip.
