The southern part of the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen lies within the Altmühltal Nature Park. The Altmühltal Panorama Trail runs for 200 kilometres along the Altmühl from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through the nature park. For a cycling trip, there is the Altmühltal Cycle Route: it runs for around 160 kilometres from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim, also through the nature park. The two routes offer a clear comparison by mode of travel; another option on the water is the almost 120-kilometre canoe route on the Altmühl between Gunzenhausen and Dietfurt/Töging. Navigation conditions may vary seasonally.

At Lake Altmühlsee, northwest of Gunzenhausen, possible activities include swimming, sailing and surfing. The 120-hectare Bird Island offers ornithological tours run by the Bavarian Association for the Protection of Birds; check in advance whether tours are available during your visit. Water sports are generally possible on the lakes in the district, but at Lake Igelsbachsee only as part of the permitted common use. Conditions and local restrictions may vary.
