Langenaltheim combines a distinctive quarry landscape with a long history of fossil discoveries. Geology is not an abstract subject here: Solnhofen limestone slabs containing fossils millions of years old are quarried in the Langenaltheimer Haardt. At the same time, marked trails lead through the quarry area or connect the town with other municipalities.

Quarries, limestone slabs and fossils

The quarries of the Langenaltheimer Haardt show how closely the local character is linked to the rock. Solnhofen limestone slabs containing fossils millions of years old are quarried here. Three specimens of Archaeopteryx have been found within the municipality of Langenaltheim. These fossil finds give the town a concrete connection to paleontology and add to the picture of its quarry landscape. If you are interested in the history of the Earth, you will find a geological theme with a distinctly local connection here.

Hiking trail and cycling loop

Langenaltheim Hiking Trail No. 3 starts in Langenaltheim, passes through the “Langenaltheimer Haardt” quarry area and is signposted in both directions. The marked cycling loop “Die STEINreichen 5-Tour” covers a different scale: it is around 46 km long and connects Langenaltheim, Mörnsheim, Solnhofen, Pappenheim and Treuchtlingen, towns whose character has been shaped by stone quarrying. This offers two different ways to explore the area: a hiking route through the quarry landscape and a cycling loop connecting five towns. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you would like to explore the geological highlights on foot or on a longer bike ride.

Places of interest in the town and surrounding area

In the town center, the restored schoolyard fountain is worth a visit. A natural landmark nearby is the oak tree in front of Heufeld: it stands about 1.5 km south of Langenaltheim and is around 450 years old. It was designated a natural monument under a protection order issued by the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district on October 23, 1992. The point of interest in the town center and the protected tree outside the town therefore differ in their location.

Another historical focus: Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen

The Limes runs for around 40 kilometers across the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district; it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. In Weißenburg, the Roman Museum displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure find and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Center. Weißenburg’s Roman heritage also includes the Roman Baths; the Biriciana fort has been partially reconstructed. The old Ansbach Hohenzollern fortress of Wülzburg also stands above Weißenburg, on the highest hilltop in the southern Franconian Jura at 630 m. It is an impressive example of Renaissance fortress architecture in Germany. The Roman and architectural heritage thus offers a different historical focus from Langenaltheim’s quarry and fossil history.
